Gorilla Trekking: A Life-Changing Adventure

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that many travelers eagerly pursue when visiting Africa. Although it requires some effort—especially with the challenging terrain and thick vegetation—reaching the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences you can have. In Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo, gorilla trekking usually offers you one hour of close encounters with these majestic creatures but for those who want a more immersive experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest allows you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas.

Where is Gorilla Trekking Done in Africa?

Gorilla trekking takes place in four national parks across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, all of which are home to the remaining mountain gorillas. These include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo. For a more diverse experience, you can even visit Kahuzi Biega National Park in Congo to see the Lowland gorillas.

Remember, a gorilla permit is required to trek in any of these parks, so be sure to secure your permit well in advance—especially if you’re planning to visit during the peak season (June to September). Booking through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience.
