Hiking Mount Muhavura, Sabinyo and Gahinga

Embark on an unforgettable volcanic hiking adventure in Uganda! The stunning landscapes and rich history make it one of the most thrilling destinations for mountain climbing enthusiasts. The Mgahinga National Park is home to three majestic peaks—Mount Muhavura, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Gahinga—part of the famous Virunga mountain range that stretches across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Whether you’re an experienced climber or a novice, there’s a hike for you in this breathtaking region.

Where Are Mount Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabinyo Located?

Mount Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabinyo are located in the southwestern corner of Uganda within the Kisoro district, nestled in Mgahinga National Park. This is Uganda’s smallest national park, bordered by Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas and the playful golden monkeys. The mountains are in close proximity to each other, allowing for stunning views of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo from their peaks.

How to Get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, home to the majestic Mount Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabinyo, is easily accessible from Kigali, Rwanda. The drive from Kigali to the park takes about four hours and you can cross through the Chanika border between Uganda and Rwanda. You might start your journey at Kigali International Airport or your hotel, perhaps taking a city tour before heading to Kisoro district in Uganda for lunch and an overnight stay.

If you’re coming from Entebbe or Kampala, you can expect a longer journey of approximately 9 to 10 hours via the Kampala-Mbarara-Kisoro highway. Along the way, you’ll be treated to beautiful scenery, including plantations, the Equator line, terraced hills, rivers, lakes and the warm hospitality of the Ugandan people. Your driver guide will make stops for photography and lunch, making the road trip enjoyable.

For a quicker option, you can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip, with flights taking about two hours. The park headquarters is just a 30-minute drive from the airstrip. Daily scheduled flights are available with Aerolink Uganda and other airlines, along with charter flight options. We can help tailor your trip to include volcano climbing in Mgahinga National Park for an unforgettable experience.

Overview of the Hiking Experience

All hikes begin early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, where guides and park wardens provide essential guidelines for a safe and enjoyable adventure. After the briefing, you’ll be accompanied by experienced guides and rangers along the trails. To aid your ascent, walking sticks are provided and hiring porters is recommended to help carry your gear, allowing you to focus on the stunning surroundings.

Mount Gahinga: The Easiest Ascent

At 3,474 meters (11,398 feet), Mount Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes and is positioned between Muhavura and Sabinyo. As a dormant volcano, it presents the easiest hiking option, typically taking about 6 hours for the round trip. The hike begins with a trek through bamboo forests before ascending the volcano’s slopes. At the summit, you’ll encounter a large swampy crater lake surrounded by lush moors and plant species like Alchemilla and Lobelia. The environment can be misty and chilly but the views are rewarding.

Mount Sabinyo: The Rugged Challenge

Mount Sabinyo, reaching 3,645 meters (11,962 feet), is known for its rugged terrain and is located at the intersection of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This peak is considered the most challenging of the three due to its craggy landscape filled with craters. The unique formation of its three peaks resembles spaced teeth, earning it the local name “Sabinyo,” which translates to “Old Man’s Teeth.” A day hike to the summit takes approximately 4 hours, with another 4 hours to return. The views from the top are truly spectacular, offering a breathtaking vista of the Virunga range across all three countries.

Mount Muhavura: The Highest Peak

Mount Muhavura, standing at 4,174 meters (13,691 feet), is the tallest of the Gahinga range and is located on the border of Uganda and Rwanda. The hike to the summit is challenging and typically takes about 5 hours to ascend, with a similar duration for the descent. At the top, you’ll find a small crater lake that you can walk around for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Virunga Mountains. Trek Africa Gorillas offers a variety of hiking packages for those eager to tackle Mount Muhavura.

How Long Does It Take to Hike Each Volcano?

The duration of each hike depends on your fitness level and pace:

• Mount Muhavura: Expect to spend about 6-7 hours climbing to the summit and the same for the descent. The trek through the lush forest offers opportunities to spot forest elephants and various bird species.
• Mount Sabinyo: This one-day hike typically takes around 4 hours to reach the summit and another 4 hours to return, depending on your pace and the weather. The terrain is rugged, with plenty of sharp ridges and craters, making it a fun and visually stunning challenge.
• Mount Gahinga: As the easiest of the three, this hike usually takes about 6 hours for the round trip. The trail leads you through beautiful bamboo vegetation before the steep climb. The shallow crater at the top is covered with swamps, adding to the unique beauty of this mountain.
