Top Romantic Activities and Things to Do in Kigali

1. Visit the Rwanda Art Museum

Kick off your honeymoon with a visit to the Rwanda Art Museum in Kanombe, located just 4 kilometers from Kigali International Airport. This former Presidential Palace turned art museum showcases a variety of contemporary artworks by Rwandan and international artists. It’s a wonderful place to discover the creative spirit of Rwanda, with displays that reflect both traditional and modern art forms. The museum also features a Kids’ Art Studio and a section displaying pieces of the FALCON 50 presidential jet that crashed in 1994. Exploring this museum together offers a blend of history, culture and creativity, making it a memorable experience for your honeymoon.

2. Explore the King’s Palace

Step back in time and immerse yourselves in Rwandan culture with a visit to the King’s Palace in Nyanza. This beautifully crafted, traditional royal palace is shaped like a beehive, offering a glimpse into the architectural styles of the past. Nyanza was once the heart of the Rwandan monarchy and a site of historical battles and power struggles. Spend the day exploring the rich heritage and stories of Rwanda’s royal past, making it a unique experience for your honeymoon in Kigali.

3. Pay Your Respects at the Kigali Genocide Memorial

A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is a profound and moving experience. The memorial is the final resting place for over 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It serves as a place of remembrance and education, offering insights into the history of the genocide and its impact on Rwanda. The serene memorial gardens provide a space for reflection and quiet contemplation, allowing visitors to honor the victims and learn the importance of preventing such atrocities. While a solemn experience, it’s a significant part of understanding Rwanda’s history.

4. Enjoy Kigali’s Nightlife

Kigali offers a lively and up-and-coming nightlife scene perfect for couples who enjoy dining, dancing and socializing. Start your evening with sunset drinks at trendy spots like Choma’D or Pili Pili Boutique Hotel, both offering fantastic views. The Kimihurura neighborhood is another popular area, boasting some of Kigali’s best nightspots where you can dance the night away.

5. Experience a Traditional Milk Bar

For a taste of Rwandan culture, visit one of Kigali’s traditional milk bars. In Rwandan culture, cows symbolize wealth, prosperity and identity and milk plays a significant role. These milk bars, often marked with the phrase ‘Amata Meza’ (meaning fresh milk), offer fresh, locally sourced milk served plain or fermented. The best milk bars are located in the Nyamirambo and Kimisagara neighborhoods. It’s a unique experience that provides a glimpse into local traditions and makes for a fun and memorable stop on your honeymoon.

6. Discover the Kigali Cultural Village

The Kigali Cultural Village is a vibrant market space where local artisans and food vendors come together to showcase their goods. It’s a fantastic place to pick up souvenirs, sample local delicacies and experience Rwanda’s cultural scene. The village also hosts workshops, festivals and music events, giving you a taste of the city’s dynamic cultural offerings.

7. Explore Local Markets and Schools in Kigali

For a truly authentic experience in Kigali, start with a visit to Kimironko Market, the city’s largest and busiest market. It’s a bustling hub filled with hundreds of vendors offering everything from handcrafted souvenirs and carved masks to a vibrant array of fresh produce sourced from across East Africa. Strolling through Kimironko Market is an adventure in itself—you’ll weave through narrow paths, duck beneath rows of hanging t-shirts and make way for locals balancing large baskets on their heads. A Kigali City Tour is one of the top things to do during your honeymoon. The tour takes you through the city’s clean, wide boulevards lined with trees, offering stunning views of the iconic rolling hills that give Rwanda its nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” You’ll explore bustling bus terminals, visit local monuments and pass by vibrant markets, giving you a perfect introduction to the city’s charm and history.
