Top Romantic Activities for Honeymooners in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

A must-do activity, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is the ultimate wildlife experience for honeymooners. This adventure lets you get close to the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The park has ten habituated gorilla families, each open to just eight visitors per day to ensure an intimate experience. Guided by expert trackers and park rangers, you’ll watch gorillas interact, eat and play in their natural setting, giving you a once-in-a-lifetime view into their world. Gorilla trekking begins with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7:00 a.m. each morning and the trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.

To join a gorilla trek, you’ll need a gorilla permit from the Rwanda Development Board, which costs $1,500 per person. Each permit grants one hour with the gorillas, providing plenty of time for photos and quiet observation. Trek Africa Gorillas can assist with permit booking and customize a tour to make your gorilla trekking adventure unforgettable.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Another unique honeymoon experience in Volcanoes National Park is golden monkey tracking. These rare and playful monkeys live in the highland forests of the park and their vibrant colors and curious nature make for an enchanting encounter. The park has two habituated groups of golden monkeys, with each group containing around 80 individuals. Unlike gorilla trekking, there’s no limit to the number of visitors for golden monkey tracking, making it a more flexible option for couples.

Golden monkey tracking starts at 7:00 a.m. at the park headquarters, where you’ll receive a briefing before setting off into the forest with a guide. Once you locate the monkeys, you’ll have an hour to observe and photograph them. A permit for golden monkey tracking costs $100 per person. This experience is a fantastic addition to your honeymoon, offering an up-close view of Rwanda’s diverse primate life.

Dian Fossey Tomb Visit and Memorial Hike

For a meaningful and historical experience, consider visiting the Dian Fossey Memorial. Dian Fossey, an American primatologist, dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas and was famously portrayed in the film Gorillas in the Mist. She was tragically killed by poachers in 1985 and her grave now lies in the park where she spent years researching and conserving these remarkable animals.

The hike to the tomb is about an hour each way and starts at the Karisoke Research Camp. As you walk through the forest to reach the memorial, your guide will share insights about Fossey’s work, her dedication to gorilla conservation and the legacy she left behind. This experience offers a unique chance to honor her work while appreciating the conservation efforts that continue to protect mountain gorillas today.

Iby’Iwacu Cultural Experience

This cultural experience offers a unique insight into traditional Rwandan life, featuring everything from traditional music and dance to the daily activities of local people. Once forest dwellers and former poachers, the locals of Iby’Iwacu now dedicate themselves to preserving their heritage and sharing it with visitors.

During your visit, you’ll have the chance to learn about ancient practices, hear captivating stories and even join in on some traditional dances. This experience is a perfect addition to a honeymoon in Volcanoes National Park, offering an authentic connection with the local Rwandan community. Trek Africa Gorillas can include this cultural experience as part of your tailored honeymoon package to make your trip truly memorable.
