How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda?

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda? What You Need to Know

Are you planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda or Rwanda? Wondering how physically challenging it might be? In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the difficulty level of gorilla trekking, so you can be fully prepared for this incredible experience.

What Makes Gorilla Trekking Physically Challenging?

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience but it can be physically demanding. The difficulty of your trek can vary greatly depending on factors like the location of the gorillas and the weather on the day of your trek. Gorillas are constantly on the move through dense rainforest, so your trek might take anywhere from a couple of hours to up to 8 hours or more. The terrain can be steep, muddy and challenging and it’s common to hike through areas without marked paths. You may also encounter high altitudes and unpredictable weather, so it’s essential to be prepared for anything.

Is Gorilla Trekking Suitable for Everyone?

If you’re not in top physical condition, don’t worry! Gorilla trekking can still be a memorable experience for people of all ages and fitness levels. There’s no maximum age for trekking but if you’re older or have mobility challenges, there are options to help you along the way. You can hire a porter to carry your backpack and assist you during the trek. For those who need extra help, a sedan chair is available for hire, which costs around $300 to transport you to and from the gorillas. Many visitors in their 70s and 80s have successfully completed the trek with the assistance of porters or a sedan chair.

How Can I Prepare Physically for Gorilla Trekking?

If you’re of middle age or not particularly fit, it’s a good idea to start preparing before your trip. Hiking regularly around your home, especially if you’re in a hilly or mountainous area, can help build endurance. Other activities such as walking long distances, light jogging or even climbing stairs can also help prepare your body for the trek.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: What to Expect

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southern part of Uganda, is one of only two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The park is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a prime location for trekking. Bwindi is divided into several sectors—Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo—each of which is home to different habituated gorilla families.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers an incredible 98% chance of seeing mountain gorillas and the trek is the primary way to experience these magnificent creatures. The park is home to gorilla families spread across four sectors: Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south and Ruhija and Buhoma in the northeast.

Gorilla trekking permits are required and can be booked in advance. Each permit allows you to trek with one specific family of gorillas and there are only eight spots per group per day. It’s crucial to secure your permit early, as availability is limited, particularly during the high season.

To go on a gorilla trek, you’ll need a valid gorilla permit for the day of your trek. Permits are limited, with only 8 people allowed per gorilla family each day, so it’s essential to book your permit in advance.

Important Tips for Booking Your Gorilla Trekking Trip

Book Your Gorilla Permits Early

We recommend securing your gorilla permit at least 3 to 4 months before your trek. During peak seasons, permits can sell out quickly, so early booking is essential. The costs for a gorilla permit are as follows:

• USD 800 for Foreign non-residents
• USD 700 for Foreign residents
• 300,000 Uganda Shillings for East African citizens

This permit grants you one hour with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, allowing you to witness these incredible creatures up close.

Book Your Accommodation in Advance

When planning your gorilla trekking adventure, booking your accommodation ahead of time is essential for a comfortable and stress-free experience. Securing your stay ensures you won’t miss out on top-rated lodges near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, so you can relax and enjoy your safari to the fullest.

Traveling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

To enhance your comfort during your trip, we recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, offering a smooth ride on Uganda’s roads. If you’d like to save time, consider flying into Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip, both of which are conveniently located near Bwindi. This will reduce the long 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala to just an hour-long transfer from the airstrip to your lodge in Buhoma.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Wondering what to wear for your gorilla trekking excursion? Here’s a helpful packing list to ensure you’re prepared for the trek:

• Long-sleeved sweater: The weather can be chilly, especially in the morning.
• 2 pairs of long trousers: These will protect your legs from the undergrowth and insects.
• Waterproof hiking boots: Essential for trekking through muddy and uneven terrain.
• Hat and sunglasses: Optional but useful if the weather is sunny.
• Camera and spare batteries: Capture the incredible moments with the gorillas (don’t forget to keep your flash off!).
• Binoculars: Great for birdwatching and spotting other wildlife in Bwindi.
• Gardening gloves: Useful for holding onto trees and branches during your hike.
• Raincoat: Since Bwindi is a rainforest, rain showers can happen unexpectedly.
• Mosquito repellent: To protect against insects in the forest.
• Sunscreen: Optional but recommended in case it gets sunny and hot.
• Neutral colors: Avoid wearing bright colors, as they can startle the gorillas. Black and blue should also be avoided since they attract Tsetse flies.
