Budongo Forest: Uganda’s Richest Rainforest for Chimpanzee Encounters

Budongo Forest Reserve is an unforgettable destination for chimpanzee trekking. Located in Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda, it’s a tropical rainforest rich in biodiversity. The forest is home to over 600 chimpanzees, with one community of 80 individuals habituated for eco-tourism, giving visitors the rare chance to observe these incredible primates in their natural habitat. Budongo also hosts various other wildlife, including Black-and-White Colobus monkeys, Olive baboons, Red-tailed monkeys, Blue monkeys and Grey-cheeked Mangabeys.

The forest’s diverse flora and fauna, combined with its chimpanzee populations, make it a prime location for eco-tourism, with chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation being the main activities. The forest is managed by Uganda Lodges in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the National Forestry Authority.

Chimpanzee Trekking and Habituation: How Much Time Do You Spend with the Chimps?

In Budongo Forest, you can either trek for one hour or four hours, depending on the type of permit you purchase:

• Chimpanzee Trekking Permit: This permit allows you to view and stay with the chimpanzees for one hour. It’s for visitors who want to see chimpanzees already accustomed to humans. The cost is USD 230 for non-foreign residents, USD 120 for foreign residents and USD 85 for Ugandan citizens. There are two trekking sessions each day: one in the morning, starting at 8:00 AM and one in the afternoon, starting at noon.
• Chimpanzee Habituation Permit: For a more immersive experience, this permit lets you spend up to four hours with the chimpanzees as you move with them, observe their behavior and learn about their feeding, living and communication habits. The cost is USD 230 for non-foreign residents, USD 160 for foreign residents and USD 90 for Ugandan citizens. This experience is conducted with the guidance of researchers and forest guides.

The trek starts with a briefing about the forest’s rules and what to expect. You will then be grouped with a park guide and ranger, who will lead you through the forest. Once the chimpanzees are located, you’ll spend one hour observing their activities, which may include feeding, resting and playing. You may also encounter other primates, reptiles and mammals, such as forest elephants.

• Waibira Community: With more than 100 members, this group formed after some individuals split from the Sonso community.
• Kaniyo-Pabidi Community: This group was habituated by the Jane Goodall Institute and is now managed by Budongo Eco-Lodge. It’s situated on the road from Masindi to Murchison Falls National Park.
