How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take in Buhoma?

Gorilla trekking in Buhoma, located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, can vary greatly depending on the movement of the gorillas. These majestic animals roam freely through the dense rainforest, making each trek unique in duration and difficulty. On some days, you might find the gorillas within a couple of hours, while on others, the trek can last up to 8 hours or more, traversing steep, unmarked trails and high-altitude terrain. Weather conditions, which can change unexpectedly and the gorillas’ movements both play a significant role in the trek’s length.

On average, gorilla trekking involves walking distances of up to 9 miles (approximately 3 hours each way) to locate the gorillas. Typically, you’ll start your trek at 8:00 AM and return to the starting point by 3:00 PM. However, it’s important to note that this is just an estimate—some treks can last the entire day, depending on the circumstances. To fully enjoy the experience, it’s recommended to be physically fit and prepared for a challenging yet rewarding adventure.
