How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take in Bwindi Forest?

How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take in Bwindi Forest? Essential Guide for Trekkers

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest can vary in duration depending on several factors. The gorillas are constantly moving through the dense rainforest and this affects the length and difficulty of the trek. While some treks might take just a couple of hours, others could extend for up to 8 hours or more, especially if the gorillas are in a remote area. The terrain can be steep and the weather unpredictable, so it’s important to be physically prepared.

Typically, the trek begins at 8 AM and can last until around 3 PM. On average, you may walk up to 9 miles (roughly 3-4 hours) to find the gorillas but the entire experience can take around 6 hours in total. Keep in mind that the trek’s length is determined by the gorillas’ movement that day and some treks can take the entire day.

About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the few places in the world where you can encounter the endangered mountain gorillas. Along with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Bwindi is home to nearly half of the global population of mountain gorillas, which numbers around 1,064.

The park is a biodiversity hotspot, with over 350 species of birds, 310 butterflies, 200 species of trees, 51 reptiles and 120 mammals. Not only is Bwindi home to gorillas but it also supports other primates, such as chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Bwindi has over 23 habituated gorilla families that are open for trekking. Each family allows only 8 trekkers per day, ensuring a more intimate and exclusive experience with these gentle giants.

This experience is available in the Rushaga sector and the area between Rushaga and Nkuringo. Since there are only 4 permits per day, it’s essential to book your permit 2-3 months in advance.

Gorilla Trekking vs Gorilla Habituation Experience: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between Gorilla Trekking and the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi lies in the duration and group size.

• Gorilla Trekking: You’ll spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas once you find them. This activity involves a group of 8 trekkers tracking each gorilla family. It’s a more typical experience for visitors looking to observe these magnificent creatures up close.
• Gorilla Habituation Experience: This gives you 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas, allowing you to participate in activities aimed at getting the gorillas comfortable with human presence. Here, the group size is smaller, with only 4 trekkers allowed per group.

Both activities start in the morning and require a reasonable level of fitness due to the challenging hiking through the dense forest. If you’re keen on spending more time with the gorillas, the Habituation Experience is a great choice.

The best time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi is during the drier months, which are typically January, February and June through early September. During these months, the forest paths are easier to navigate and the vegetation isn’t as thick, giving you a clearer view of the gorillas.

While trekking is possible year-round, these months make for a more comfortable experience in terms of weather and trekking conditions.
