How Many Hours Can You Spend with Gorillas in Africa?

If you’re planning to experience gorilla trekking in Africa, you may be wondering, how many hours can one spend with gorillas? Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences, attracting travelers from all over the world to visit Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the physical demands, challenging terrain and high cost, spending time with these endangered creatures in their natural habitat is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Typical Gorilla Trekking Experience: How Long Do You Spend with Gorillas?

Gorilla trekking involves a hike through the dense forests, crossing rivers, swamps and often challenging terrain. The activity can be physically demanding, so it’s important to be in good fitness. Typically, in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, you’ll have a chance to spend one hour with the gorillas once you locate them. This time allows you to observe and interact with the gorillas as they go about their day in the wild.

However, if you wish to spend more time with these majestic creatures, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which allows you to stay with the gorillas for up to four hours. This is ideal for travelers who want a deeper connection with the gorillas, as you’ll also be working alongside researchers and trackers during the experience.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is available in three African countries that are home to the world’s remaining mountain gorillas:

1. Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
2. Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
3. Democratic Republic of Congo: Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas) and Kahuzi Beiga National Park (Lowland Gorillas)

These parks offer unique trekking experiences and a gorilla permit is required to trek in any of these areas. Given the limited availability of permits, it’s highly recommended to book your trek well in advance, particularly if you’re traveling during peak season (June to September).

Best Time of Year for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round but the best time to go is during the drier months:

• January and February
• June to early September

These months are ideal because the trekking conditions are less challenging and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.

What Is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. As for the maximum age, there’s no strict upper limit but it depends on your fitness level. If you’re older and may find it difficult to trek, you can opt for a sedan chair carrier service. This service is available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, allowing elders to be carried by porters to and from the forest. The cost for this service ranges from $400 to $500.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Cancellation Policy

Once you purchase a gorilla permit, it’s important to note that cancellations are subject to penalties. In Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, permits are non-refundable.
