How Long It Takes to See Gorillas in Bwindi

The amount of time it takes to see gorillas during your trek varies depending on the gorilla group’s location and the terrain.

• Trekking Duration: The trek can range from 3 to 6 hours in total, including the hike to find the gorillas and the return journey.
• Time with Gorillas: Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll spend 1 hour observing and interacting with them in their natural habitat.

However, in some cases, gorilla trekking can take an entire day—up to 8 or more hours of hiking—especially if the gorilla group has moved deep into the forest. Be prepared for varied conditions, as the trek involves navigating steep, uneven terrain and thick vegetation.

Factors That Affect Gorilla Trekking Duration

1. Gorilla Movements: Mountain gorillas are always on the move, which means trackers must follow their trail. The time to find them varies depending on their location on the day of your trek.
2. Weather Conditions: Bwindi’s rainforest weather can change rapidly. Rain can make the trails muddy and slippery, potentially increasing trekking time.
3. Fitness Levels: Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. The pace of the trek often depends on the group’s overall fitness.
4. Trail Difficulty: Some trails are steep, with no clearly marked paths, making the trek more strenuous and time-consuming.

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

If you’re looking for a longer and more immersive experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is available in the southern part of Bwindi, particularly in Rushaga and areas between Rushaga and Nkuringo. • Spend more time with the gorillas (4 hours vs. 1 hour during regular trekking).
• Observe their behaviors more closely as they gradually become more comfortable around humans.

For this experience, it’s best to stay in lodges located in the southern part of Bwindi, such as in Rushaga or Nkuringo.
