How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Cost?

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park? This guide will break down the costs involved and give you all the details you need to plan a memorable trip.

Cost of a Gorilla Trekking Permit in Bwindi

The primary cost of gorilla trekking is the permit. In Bwindi, the gorilla trekking permit prices are as follows:

• USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents.
• USD 700 per person for foreign residents.
• UGX 300,000 (approx. USD 80) for East African citizens.

This permit allows you to spend one magical hour observing a gorilla family in their natural habitat after your trek. If you want a more immersive experience, you can opt for a gorilla habituation experience permit. This permit costs:

• USD 1,500 per person for foreign non-residents.
• USD 1,000 per person for foreign residents.
• UGX 750,000 for East African citizens.

The habituation experience allows you to spend up to four hours with semi-habituated gorillas alongside researchers and trackers, offering a deeper understanding of their behavior.

Why Choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for Gorilla Trekking?

Bwindi is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a premier destination for this unique experience. The park has four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, each with several habituated gorilla families available for tracking. Every gorilla family is led by a dominant silverback and has its own unique dynamics, making every trek special.

Essential Gorilla Trekking Guidelines

• Only 8 people are allowed to trek a single gorilla family per day to minimize human impact on the gorillas.
• The minimum age for trekking is 15 years.
• Gorilla permits are limited, especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September and December), so it’s crucial to book well in advance.

Additional Costs of a Gorilla Safari in Bwindi

1. Transportation Costs

Transportation to Bwindi can vary depending on the number of travelers and the type of vehicle. A 4×4 safari vehicle is recommended due to the park’s remote location and rugged terrain. Here’s an estimate:

• Fuel for a round trip: Approx. USD 280.
• Vehicle hire: Starts from USD 150 per day.
• Driver/guide fees: Around USD 50 per day.

Costs per person decrease if you’re traveling in a group, so it’s a great idea to share transport if possible.

• Luxury lodges: USD 400–1,000 per person per night.

It’s advisable to book accommodations in the same sector where you’ll be trekking for easier access to the starting point.
