Gorilla Trekking in Uganda vs. Rwanda: Which Destination is Best for You?

Both Uganda and Rwanda offer incredible gorilla trekking experiences but there are a few differences to consider when choosing your destination.

Uganda:

• Location: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a tropical rainforest with diverse vegetation.
• Trekking Experience: The dense forest can make trekking more challenging but it’s equally rewarding.
• Cost: Gorilla permits are more affordable at $800 per person.
• Travel Time: Bwindi is about 8-9 hours from Entebbe but you can also access it via Kigali, Rwanda, reducing travel time to 4-5 hours.

Rwanda:

• Location: Volcanoes National Park, part of the Virunga Mountains with montane bamboo vegetation.
• Trekking Experience: The terrain is less dense, making it slightly easier to spot gorillas.
• Cost: Gorilla permits are $1,500 per person.
• Travel Time: Just 2-3 hours from Kigali, making it more accessible for shorter trips.

Both countries guarantee a 99% chance of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat. While Rwanda is often seen as more convenient, Uganda offers a more budget-friendly option without compromising the experience.

How Long and Challenging is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can vary in duration and difficulty. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and the terrain. The forest is steep, with no marked paths and the weather can change quickly.

To prepare:

• Be physically fit.
• Wear sturdy hiking boots and waterproof clothing.
