How to Book the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

If you’re seeking an unforgettable experience with mountain gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a must-try. This unique safari offers the chance to spend four hours with the endangered mountain gorillas, far more time than the typical one-hour gorilla tracking encounter. The experience is exclusive to Uganda, with only a limited number of permits available each day, making it a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique activity that involves trekking through Bwindi’s dense forest to find semi-habituated mountain gorillas. These gorillas are part of specific groups that are not yet fully accustomed to human presence. Once located, you’ll participate in efforts to help them become more comfortable with humans.

During the experience, you will spend four hours with the gorillas, allowing you to observe their behaviors, learn more about their daily lives and gain a deeper understanding of these fascinating creatures. This extended time in the wild is a special opportunity for those looking to get closer to mountain gorillas and their conservation efforts.

Unlike the typical gorilla tracking, where you spend an hour with the gorillas, the habituation experience gives you much more time to interact and observe, offering a truly immersive adventure. The group size is limited to 4 people, ensuring a more personalized and intimate experience.

Where is the Gorilla Habituation Experience Done?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is only available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, located in the southern sectors of the park:

• Rushaga
• Nkuringo

These two sectors are the only areas in Bwindi where you can participate in the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Bwindi itself has four major sectors for gorilla trekking:

• Ruhija
• Buhoma
• Rushaga
• Nkuringo

While Bwindi is home to 12 habituated gorilla families available for regular tracking, only 2 gorilla families are open for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This makes the experience even more exclusive.

How to Book Gorilla Habituation Experience Permits

Booking a Gorilla Habituation Experience begins with securing your permit. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Confirm Your Travel Dates: Once you have your travel dates in mind, send us an email so we can check permit availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
2. Permit Availability: After confirming the availability of permits for your dates, we will send you an invoice for payment.
3. Payment and Confirmation: Once we receive your payment, we will secure your permits immediately and send you a scanned copy as confirmation of your booking.

Tip: Since only 8 permits are available per day (with a maximum of 4 people per group), it’s essential to book 2-3 months in advance to guarantee your spot. Permits tend to sell out quickly due to the limited availability.

What is the Best Time for the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is best enjoyed during the dry seasons in Uganda, which typically run from June to October and December to March. During these months, the trails are easier to navigate as the rainfall is minimal and the vegetation is not too dense, offering better visibility for gorilla sightings. The dry conditions also make the treks more comfortable and enjoyable.

However, while the wet season (April, May and November) leads to thicker vegetation, the gorillas are typically found closer to the lodge, making treks shorter. Even in the wet season, there’s a 99% chance of encountering the gorillas.
