How to Prepare for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Planning to trek gorillas in Uganda? Wondering how to prepare for an unforgettable experience, even if you’re not in the best physical condition? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Gorilla trekking in Uganda is accessible to people of all fitness levels and we’ll guide you on how to get ready for this life-changing adventure.

Understanding Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, located in the southwestern corner of Uganda near the Congo border, is one of only two places in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Bwindi is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a top destination for wildlife lovers.

The park is divided into several sectors, including Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo, each offering different trekking experiences. Gorilla families live in these sectors and each family is headed by a dominant male, known as the silverback. Only 8 people are allowed to visit each gorilla family per day, so a gorilla permit is required to trek.

How to Prepare Physically for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a truly unique experience and while it can be physically demanding, there are options to make it more comfortable for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.

• For Those Who Are Less Fit or Have Mobility Issues: If you’re worried about the trek due to age or physical limitations, there are solutions to ensure you can still enjoy the experience. You can hire a porter to carry your backpack and assist you with the hike or even use a sedan chair for an additional fee (around $300), which will carry you to and from the gorillas. We’ve had visitors in their 70s and 80s successfully trek to see the gorillas with the help of these services.
• Preparing Physically: If you’re of middle age or relatively unfit, we recommend some pre-trip preparation. Take advantage of any hilly or mountainous terrain near your home and try walking, hiking or even light running to build stamina. The more you prepare your body for movement, the more enjoyable your trek will be.

Important Planning Tips for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Book Your Gorilla Permit in Advance

It’s essential to book your gorilla permit at least one month in advance to guarantee your spot. While permits are often available, some dates may sell out, especially during peak travel seasons. Gorilla permits are required to trek in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and prices vary:

1. USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
2. USD 700 for Foreign Residents
3. 300,000 UGX for East African Citizens
This allows you to spend an unforgettable hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat.

Reserve Your Accommodation Early

After booking your permits, make sure to secure your accommodation. Bwindi and the surrounding areas offer a range of lodging options, from luxurious to budget-friendly. Booking early will help you get the best choices and ensure a comfortable stay during your trekking adventure.

Plan Your Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

You can reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park by road or air. We recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser for comfort, especially if you’re covering long distances. Alternatively, you can fly to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip, both of which are close to the park. This cuts your travel time significantly—what would normally be an 8-9 hour drive from Kampala/Entebbe can be reduced to just 1 hour from Kihihi to your lodge.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for Gorilla Trekking

By Air

You can reach Bwindi by air for a quicker and more comfortable journey. AeroLink offers both scheduled and charter flights to Kisoro Airstrip, located near Bwindi. From Kisoro, you’ll have a scenic 2-hour drive to Rushaga (a popular sector for gorilla trekking). Note that AeroLink has a baggage allowance of 15 kilograms per person, with excess baggage charged at $3 per kilo.

For families, infants under 2 years fly for free and children over 12 years are charged at 70% of the adult fare.

By Road

If you prefer to travel by road, Bwindi can be reached from Entebbe or Kampala with an 8-9 hour drive. You’ll pass through Kabale before heading to Rushaga. Alternatively, you can access the park from Kigali, Rwanda, which is approximately a 4-5 hour drive.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Essential Gear Checklist

Planning to trek gorillas in Uganda? One of the first questions you might have is: What should I pack for this adventure? Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-timer, packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of what to bring to ensure you’re well-prepared for your gorilla trekking journey in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking

1. Long-Sleeved Sweater
The weather in the park can get chilly, especially early in the morning or at higher altitudes. A light, long-sleeved sweater will keep you warm.
2. 2 Pairs of Long Trousers
Comfortable and durable trousers are essential to protect your legs from scratches as you navigate through the forest.
3. Waterproof Hiking Boots
The trails in Bwindi can be muddy, so waterproof hiking boots are a must to keep your feet dry and comfortable.
4. Hat and Sunglasses (Optional)
Depending on the weather, a hat and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun. These are optional but useful, especially on sunny days.
5. Camera with Extra Batteries
Don’t forget your camera to capture the memories of this once-in-a-lifetime experience! Be sure to bring extra batteries, as there may not be charging facilities in the park. Remember to turn off the flash to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
6. Binoculars
If you’re a bird lover, don’t forget your binoculars! Bwindi is home to a variety of bird species and binoculars will enhance your wildlife viewing.
7. Gardening Gloves
These are helpful when holding onto trees or branches during the trek, providing extra grip and protection for your hands.
8. Raincoat
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a tropical rainforest, so rain can be unpredictable. A lightweight raincoat will keep you dry and prepared for sudden downpours.
9. Mosquito Repellent
Since you’ll be trekking through a forest, it’s important to protect yourself from mosquitoes. Bring a good repellent to avoid bites.
10. Sunscreen
Depending on the season, it can get quite hot. Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburns, especially if you’re trekking at higher elevations.
11. Neutral-Colored Clothing
Bright colors can attract attention from the gorillas and disrupt their natural behavior, so it’s best to wear neutral colors. Also, avoid black and blue, as they attract Tsetse flies.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

While Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is open for trekking year-round, the best months for gorilla trekking are June to August and December to February. These months tend to have lower rainfall, making the trails less slippery and easier to navigate.

If you trek during the wet season (March to May and November), expect higher chances of rainfall. However, some lodges offer discounts during these months, which can make for a more affordable experience.
