Is it Possible to Trek the Nshongi Gorilla Family Exclusively?

Yes, it is absolutely possible to trek the Nshongi gorilla family exclusively! Nshongi was once the largest gorilla group in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, with over 36 members. Over time, the group split into two smaller groups, forming the Bweza and Mishaya families. Currently, the Nshongi group has 25 members, led by the dominant silverback, Nshongi, along with 3 sub-silverbacks, 4 blackbacks, 7 adult females, 6 juveniles and 4 infants. Watching this playful and lively group, especially the adorable infants, is truly a remarkable experience.

If you’re considering trekking the Nshongi gorilla family exclusively, it’s entirely possible through Trek Africa Gorillas. Blocking all the permits will allow you to trek the Nshongi group privately, either as an individual or with your travel group. Here’s how you can arrange it:

How to Book an Exclusive Nshongi Gorilla Trek

To secure an exclusive trek, you’ll need to block all the permits for the Nshongi gorilla family. There are only 8 permits available daily, so you would need to book and pay for all of them to ensure an exclusive experience. You can pay for the permits in advance, either in full (100%) or in part (70% or 30%).

Permit Costs:

• USD 800 for foreign non-residents
• USD 700 for foreign residents
• 300,000 UGX for East African citizens

Each permit grants you a one-hour encounter with the gorillas. If you’re planning to travel solo, this means you’ll need to pay for all 8 permits, which totals USD 4,000 for foreign non-residents. This guarantees that you’ll be the only visitors with the Nshongi gorilla family on that day.

Important Things to Consider When Planning Your Private Gorilla Trek

1. Securing All Permits in Advance
The Nshongi gorilla family has 8 permits available each day. To ensure no other tourists join you, you’ll need to block all these permits in advance. We recommend booking at least 3-4 months ahead, especially during high season, as permits sell quickly. You can book by paying 100%, 70% or 30% of the total amount in advance.
2. Booking Exclusive Lodging in Rushaga
For an enhanced experience, consider booking your accommodation in Rushaga, near the park. This will ensure comfort and privacy during your stay. Rushaga offers a variety of lodge options, including luxury accommodations like:
   • Four Gorillas Lodge
   • Gorilla Safari Lodge
   • Gorilla Valley Lodge

Alternatively, you could stay in the nearby Nkuringo sector, with options like:

   • Gorilla Heights Lodge
   • Nkuringo Bwindi Lodge
   • Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge
3. Traveling to Rushaga
To reach Rushaga, you have a few options for comfortable travel:
   • By road: From Entebbe/Kampala, it’s about an 8-9 hour drive. Alternatively, you can travel from Kigali, Rwanda, which is about a 4-5 hour drive via the Cyanika border.
   • By air: You can fly into Kisoro Airstrip, which is much closer to Rushaga (around a 2-hour drive from the airstrip to your lodge). Aero Link offers flights from Entebbe to Kisoro, saving you time and providing a more comfortable journey.

What to Wear for Your Nshongi Gorilla Trek

Wondering what to wear for your exclusive trek of the Nshongi gorilla family? Here’s a handy guide to help you prepare:

1. Long-Sleeved Sweater: The weather can be chilly in the morning, so a long-sleeved sweater is essential for warmth.
2. Two Pairs of Long Trousers: Opt for comfortable, durable long trousers to protect your legs as you hike through the forest.
3. Waterproof Hiking Boots: The terrain can be muddy, so sturdy, waterproof boots are a must to keep your feet dry and comfortable.
4. Hat and Sunglasses: These are optional but can be helpful if the weather is sunny. A wide-brimmed hat will protect you from the sun and sunglasses will shield your eyes from the glare.
5. Camera and Extra Batteries: You’ll want to capture the magical moments with the gorillas, so don’t forget your camera. Make sure to bring extra batteries and keep the flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
6. Binoculars: These are useful for spotting birds and other wildlife in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, adding to your adventure.
7. Gardening Gloves: These will come in handy when holding onto tree branches and navigating the dense jungle.
8. Raincoat: Since Bwindi Forest is a rainforest, the weather can be unpredictable. Always have a raincoat packed to stay dry in case of sudden showers.
9. Mosquito Repellent: To protect yourself from insects, bring along a good mosquito repellent. The forest has its fair share of critters.
10. Sunscreen: While it can rain often, it can also get quite sunny at times. Applying sunscreen will help protect your skin from sunburns, especially if you’re trekking during the hotter months.
11. Neutral-Colored Clothing: Avoid wearing bright colors, as they can startle the gorillas. Stick to neutral colors like greens, browns and earth tones. Also, avoid black and blue, as they can attract tsetse flies.

Best Time to Trek the Nshongi Gorilla Family

The best time to trek the Nshongi gorilla family is during the drier months, from January, February and June to early September. During this period, the trails are less muddy and the vegetation is thinner, providing clearer views of the gorillas.

How to Get to Rushaga: Travel Options

By Air:

Traveling by air is the quickest and most comfortable option. Aero Link offers both scheduled and charter flights to Kisoro Airstrip, which is about an hour’s drive from Rushaga. Once you arrive at Kisoro, you’ll be picked up by one of our professional guides and taken to your lodge.

By Road:

If you prefer to drive, Rushaga is accessible via a scenic 8-9 hour road trip from Entebbe/Kampala. The route takes you through Kabale town before continuing to Rushaga. Alternatively, you can access Rushaga from Kigali, Rwanda, which is about a 4-5 hour drive through the Cyanika border.
