Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: Your Ultimate Guide

Planning a trip to Africa for an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience? If you’re looking for a luxury experience in Rwanda, this guide will help you plan and book your trek with ease. Gorilla trekking is one of the most unique and life-changing wildlife experiences you can have. Despite the cost, physical challenges and sometimes tough terrain, encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is truly worth the effort.

Whether you’re trekking through lush forests, crossing rivers or hiking up challenging slopes, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the endangered mountain gorillas. And for those who want to spend more time with these incredible animals, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda gives you up to four hours with the gorillas.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is available in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These countries are home to the last remaining mountain gorillas and each offers a unique trekking experience:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park.
• Congo: Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas).

To trek in any of these parks, you must have a gorilla permit. We recommend booking your gorilla trek as early as possible, especially for peak seasons (June to September), as permits and accommodations tend to sell out quickly. Booking at least 5 months in advance is ideal.

Gorilla Permits and Costs in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is an exclusive experience, with permits priced as follows:

• Foreign non-residents: $1,500 per person.
• Foreign residents: $500 per person.
• East African citizens: $200 per person.

Each permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda is home to 12 gorilla families, with 96 permits available each day for trekking. You can either book your permit directly through the Rwanda Development Board or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas, which specializes in luxury gorilla trekking experiences.

Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

To participate in gorilla trekking, the minimum age is 15 and the maximum age is generally 85, depending on your fitness levels. For older travelers or those with limited mobility, Bwindi Forest offers sedan chairs that allow porters to carry you to and from the forest. The cost for this service ranges from $400–$500 and it can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is available year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry months, from January to February and June to early September. These months offer more comfortable conditions for hiking, as the trails are less muddy and the visibility for spotting gorillas is improved due to reduced vegetation.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Proper gear is essential for a successful and comfortable gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda. Here’s a packing list to ensure you’re prepared:

• Comfortable, sturdy hiking boots: The terrain is often muddy and some sections can be steep and challenging.
• Long-sleeve shirt and lightweight trousers: Protect yourself from the undergrowth, stinging nettles and insects.
• Insect repellent: To keep bugs at bay.
• Torch/flashlight (and spare batteries): Useful for early morning treks.
• Water bottle: Stay hydrated during the hike.
• Camera and lenses: Capture your memories but remember to turn off your flash.
• Gardening gloves: Helpful for holding branches while trekking.
• Rain jacket: Rwanda’s rainforest can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden showers.
• Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun.
• Binoculars: For spotting birds and other wildlife along the way.
• Swimwear: If you plan to relax by a pool afterward.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your gorilla trekking permit, be aware that cancellations are subject to penalties. The cancellation policy in Rwanda, Uganda and Congo is the same: no refunds are offered for cancellations made within 8 days of your trek. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cancellation policies have been relaxed in recent years, allowing travelers more flexibility to reschedule their trips.
