What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

Gorilla habituation is a special activity that involves trekking deep into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to find semi-habituated mountain gorillas. These gorillas are still getting used to human presence and during the experience, you’ll take part in activities aimed at making them more comfortable around people. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, which allows only one hour with the gorillas, the habituation experience gives you up to four hours with them, providing a deeper understanding of their behavior and conservation efforts.

Only four visitors are allowed per group, making this an intimate and exclusive experience.

Gorilla Habituation vs. Gorilla Trekking: What’s the Difference?

Group Size	4 people	8 people
Permit Cost	$1,500 (Foreign Non-Residents)	$800 (Foreign Non-Residents)

How Much Does a Luxury Primate Habituation Safari Cost?

The biggest cost factor for a primate habituation safari is the permit:

• Gorilla Habituation Permit: $1,500 (foreign non-residents), $1,000 (residents), 750,000 UGX (East African citizens)
• Chimpanzee Habituation Permit: $300 per person
• Golden Monkey Habituation Permit: $100 per person

In addition to the permit, you’ll need to budget for accommodation, transportation and guiding services. Our 4-day Uganda-Rwanda gorilla habituation package starts at $1,272 per person. Contact us for a tailored itinerary.

How to Book a Luxury Primate Habituation Experience

To secure your spot, you’ll need to obtain a habituation permit in advance. Since only four people are allowed per group, permits are limited and sell out quickly. We recommend booking at least 2–3 months in advance.

Once you have your travel dates, reach out to us and we’ll check permit availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. If permits are available, we’ll provide an invoice for payment. Upon confirmation, we will secure your permit and send you a scanned copy for your records.

Best Time for Gorilla Habituation Experience

The ideal time for gorilla habituation in Uganda is during the dry seasons:

• June to October
• December to March

During these months, there’s less rainfall, making trekking easier and visibility better for photography. However, habituation can be done year-round and the rainy season (April, May and November) has the advantage of shorter treks as food is more abundant for gorillas.
