About Buhoma Sector: The Heart of Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, making it one of the most renowned areas for gorilla trekking. As the first sector to be habituated back in 1993, Buhoma is also home to the Mubare Gorilla family, as well as three other families: Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe.

This sector attracts tourists year-round, even during the low season, due to its convenient location, historic significance and ample opportunities to see mountain gorillas. Additionally, Buhoma is home to two of the only lodges located within Bwindi Forest itself—Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp and Bwindi Lodge—ensuring guests a truly unique experience.

With a variety of luxury accommodations available, Buhoma is perfect for those seeking a high-end experience. The availability of multiple gorilla families and the high number of permits available make it a popular sector, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

Key Travel Tips for Buhoma Gorilla Trekking

Book Your Gorilla Permits in Advance

For a seamless experience, it’s crucial to book your gorilla permits 3 to 4 months in advance, particularly during the high season. Gorilla permits are required for all trekkers and they are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of a permit is USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents and 300,000 Uganda Shillings for East African citizens. With your permit, you’ll get a one-hour encounter with the gorillas in Bwindi.

This makes your trip more enjoyable and less tiring, especially if you’re limited on time.
