Mgahinga Gorilla Permits: Your Complete Guide

Are you planning to visit Uganda to meet the gorillas at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park? Wondering how to secure your gorilla permit? You’re in the right place! In this guide, we answer all your questions on booking gorilla permits for Uganda and Rwanda, including how to buy a permit, the best time for gorilla trekking and more.

How to Book Mgahinga Gorilla Permits

Booking your Mgahinga Gorilla permits is essential for securing your spot for a thrilling gorilla trekking experience. Once you’ve confirmed your travel dates, simply reach out to us at info@trekafricagorillas.com. We will check the availability of permits for your selected dates with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). After confirming availability, we will send you an invoice for the payment. Once payment is received, we will purchase your permits and email you a scanned copy for your records.

It’s advisable to book your gorilla permits at least 2-3 months in advance since permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during the peak trekking seasons.

Where is Gorilla Trekking Done in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is an unforgettable experience in Africa, available in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The four national parks that house the remaining mountain gorillas are:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Uganda)
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda)
• Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
• Virunga National Park (Congo)

Additionally, Congo offers an opportunity to trek lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

For any of these locations, you’ll need a gorilla permit to participate. It’s recommended to start booking your trek as early as possible, especially if you’re visiting during the peak season from June to September. Booking at least 5 months ahead is highly advisable.

Cost and Getting Gorilla Permits in Uganda

In Uganda, the cost of a gorilla trekking permit is:

• $800 for foreign non-residents
• $700 for foreign residents
• $80 for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and South Sudan)

These permits allow you to trek and spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families: 16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga, meaning 136 permits are available each day.

If you’re interested in spending more time with the gorillas, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, available only in Bwindi. These permits cost $1500 and allow you to spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas.

You can book your permits directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or through trusted tour operators like Trek Africa Gorillas.
