New Year’s Primate Safari in Uganda: Your Ultimate Adventure

New Year’s Primate Safari in Uganda — Are you dreaming of visiting Uganda for the New Year and eager to see the country’s incredible primates? Look no further! Uganda offers some of the best primate safaris in the world, giving you the chance to encounter mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys and other fascinating species of monkeys in their natural habitats.

On a New Year’s primate safari, you’ll explore Uganda’s top primate destinations, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (home to the iconic mountain gorillas), Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest and Budongo Forest (great for chimpanzee sightings) and Kidepo Valley National Park (where you can spot the elusive Patas monkey).

Primates are one of the main attractions for travelers visiting Uganda and many guests have described their experiences as unforgettable, magical and even life-changing. If you’re planning your New Year’s trip to Uganda, a primate safari should definitely be on your list!

How Much Does a New Year’s Primate Safari in Uganda Cost?

The cost of a New Year’s primate safari in Uganda depends on several factors, including which primates you’re interested in seeing, how long you plan to stay and where you’ll be trekking. The biggest cost is typically the permit fee, which varies based on the species you want to encounter. In addition, there are other costs for transport, accommodation and guiding services.

Here’s a breakdown of permit prices for Uganda’s most popular primate safaris:

• Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permit
  • USD $800 for foreign non-residents
  • USD $700 for foreign residents
  • UGX 300,000 for East African citizens
This permit allows you to spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Gorilla Habituation Permit
  • USD $1500 for foreign non-residents
  • USD $1000 for foreign residents
  • UGX 750,000 for East African citizens
This special permit gives you the opportunity to spend 4 hours with the semi-habituated mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
• Chimpanzee Trekking Permit
  • USD $250 for foreign non-residents
  • USD $200 for foreign residents
  • UGX 180,000 for East African citizens
This permit lets you spend 1 hour with the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park.

These permit fees are essential to fund conservation efforts and support the local communities that protect these wildlife areas. While they may seem like a significant investment, the experience of encountering these magnificent primates in their natural habitat is something truly priceless.

Is a Primate Safari in Uganda Worth the Investment?

Absolutely! What you pay for a primate safari in Uganda is more than just a travel expense—it’s an investment in wildlife conservation and local communities. Your contribution helps fund the protection of endangered primates and their natural habitats. Without primate tourism, these species and their ecosystems could face serious threats but thanks to tourism, Uganda’s government, through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, can safeguard these precious habitats.

Moreover, the money spent on your safari also benefits local communities living near the primate habitats. The tourism fees, including permit and park entrance fees, contribute 20% directly to local projects. This funding supports schools, hospitals, agricultural initiatives and community development, creating a cycle of positive impact. So, every penny you spend not only supports conservation but also empowers the local communities.

While the costs for primate permits may seem high, many travelers find the experience truly worth the investment. The chance to see these incredible creatures up close, in the wild, is a rare opportunity that makes the journey worthwhile. Some visitors even opt to trek more than once, especially for the mountain gorillas, to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

When Is the Best Time for Primate Safaris in Uganda?

The best time to visit Uganda for primate trekking is during the dry season, from June to October and December to March. During these months, the weather is mild, with light rainfall, making treks through the forests easier. The vegetation is also less dense, which means better visibility and great opportunities for photos.

While April, May and November are the wet months, they offer shorter treks because the primates tend to stay closer to their feeding grounds due to readily available food. Although vegetation may be taller, the treks are still very rewarding and you still have a 99% chance of seeing primates in their natural habitats year-round.
