The low season in Uganda falls during the months of April, May and November. During this time, Uganda sees fewer tourists, meaning you’ll enjoy less crowded parks and attractions. This also makes for a more private and intimate safari experience. Trek Africa Gorillas is here to help you secure the best luxury lodges in Buhoma sector, ensuring a comfortable and unforgettable stay during your luxury gorilla trekking adventure.

About Buhoma Sector: The Gateway to Bwindi’s Mountain Gorillas

Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and it’s one of the most iconic sectors in the park. It was the first sector to be habituated for gorilla trekking back in 1993, shortly after Bwindi was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buhoma is home to the Mubare Gorilla family, the oldest and one of the most famous families, as well as the Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe families.

Buhoma attracts many tourists, even during the low season, because of its rich gorilla history and the fact that it houses the first habituated gorilla families. It’s also one of the most visited sectors due to its convenient access to gorilla trekking, making it an excellent choice for travelers looking to maximize their chances of encountering gorillas. Moreover, Buhoma is home to some of the finest luxury accommodations within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, including Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp and Bwindi Lodge, offering an exceptional trekking experience.

Key Planning Tips for Your Luxury Gorilla Trek to Buhoma During the Low Season

1. Secure Your Gorilla Permits Early

We highly recommend securing your gorilla permits at least 3 to 4 months in advance when planning a luxury gorilla trekking holiday to Buhoma during the low season. Although it’s the off-peak season, gorilla permits can still sell out, especially for the most popular sectors like Buhoma.

The cost of a gorilla permit is:

• USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents
• 300,000 Uganda Shillings for East African Citizens

Your permit grants you one hour with the mountain gorillas in the wild, offering a rare and unforgettable opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat.

2. Choose Luxury Lodges for a Comfortable Stay in Buhoma

For an unforgettable experience, it’s essential to stay in luxury accommodations. Buhoma offers several high-end lodges that combine comfort, luxury and proximity to the gorillas, ensuring your trip is both relaxing and adventurous. Here are some top choices:

• Bwindi Lodge (located within Bwindi Forest)
• Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp (also within Bwindi Forest)
• Mahogany Springs Lodge
• Silverback Lodge

These lodges provide not only luxurious amenities but also stunning views and a unique opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the forest from the comfort of your room.

3. Luxury and Comfortable Travel Options to Buhoma Sector

To ensure a comfortable journey, consider traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser. The roads to Buhoma can be rough but a well-equipped vehicle will provide comfort during your journey.

Alternatively, you can take a flight to Kihihi Airstrip, which is just an hour’s drive from Buhoma. This option drastically reduces the long 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe/Kampala to a more relaxed 1-hour drive from the airstrip to your lodge.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking: Essential Clothing and Gear

If you’re preparing for a gorilla trekking adventure, you may be wondering what to wear. The key to a comfortable and enjoyable trek is dressing appropriately for the conditions. Below is a list of essential clothing and gear to bring for your gorilla trek:

1. Long-Sleeve Sweater: The forest can get chilly, especially in the early mornings, so it’s a good idea to bring a warm, long-sleeved sweater.
2. Two Pairs of Long Trousers: It’s best to wear long pants to protect your legs from the dense vegetation and occasional sharp branches.
3. Waterproof Hiking Boots: The trails can be muddy and slippery, so sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must to keep your feet dry and safe.
4. Hat and Sunglasses: While optional, a hat and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun, especially during midday.
5. Camera with Extra Batteries: Capture the unforgettable moments of your trek. Make sure to bring a camera with long-lasting batteries. Don’t forget to turn off your flash to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
6. Binoculars: These are great for spotting wildlife such as the diverse bird species and other primates in the forest.
7. Gardening Gloves: Wearing gardening gloves can help you grip onto trees and branches while navigating through the thick forest.
8. Raincoat: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a rainforest, so rain is unpredictable. Be sure to bring a light, packable raincoat to stay dry.
9. Mosquito Repellent: The forest is home to various insects, so applying mosquito repellent is highly recommended to prevent bites.
10. Sunscreen: While not always necessary, sunscreen can help protect your skin if the weather turns hot during the trek.
11. Neutral-Colored Clothing: To avoid disturbing the gorillas, avoid wearing bright colors as they may scare them off. Black and blue colors should also be avoided as they attract tsetse flies. Opt for neutral colors like khaki or green.
