Key Considerations When Planning Your Luxury Gorilla Trekking Trip to Rushaga

Booking Your Gorilla Permits in Advance

When planning your luxury gorilla trekking trip to Rushaga, it’s crucial to book your gorilla permits well in advance—at least 3 to 4 months before your trip. Gorilla permits can sell out quickly during peak seasons, as they are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. A gorilla permit is required to trek the mountain gorillas in Rushaga and the cost varies based on your nationality:

• USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents
• 300,000 UGX for East African Citizens

The permit gives you the opportunity to spend one hour with the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. For more details on how to secure your gorilla permits for Rushaga, contact us here.

Luxury and Comfortable Travel Options to Rushaga

For a luxury and comfortable journey to Rushaga, we recommend traveling in 4×4 Land Cruisers, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride along Uganda’s scenic roads. If you prefer a quicker option, you can also opt to fly to Kisoro Airstrip, which is close to Rushaga. This significantly reduces the time spent on the road—from about 8-9 hours driving from Entebbe/Kampala to just a 2-hour drive from Kisoro to your lodge in Rushaga.

Essential Packing Guide: What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Wondering what to wear for your gorilla trekking adventure in Rushaga? Here’s a helpful guide to make sure you’re prepared for your trek:

1. Long-Sleeved Sweater

The weather in the park can get chilly, especially in the early mornings and evenings. A long-sleeved sweater will keep you warm during these colder moments.

2. Two Pairs of Long Trousers

To protect your legs from scratches and insects, wear two pairs of long trousers. It’s advisable to opt for lightweight, quick-drying fabrics for comfort throughout the trek.

3. Waterproof Hiking Boots

The trails in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be slippery and muddy. Waterproof hiking boots with good grip will help you navigate the terrain with ease and comfort.

4. Hat and Sunglasses (Optional)

If you’re trekking during the warmer months, consider bringing a hat and sunglasses for protection from the sun. However, this is optional depending on the weather.

5. Camera and Extra Batteries

Capturing memories of your gorilla trekking experience is essential, so make sure you bring a camera and extra batteries. Keep your flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.

6. Binoculars

If you’re keen on birdwatching or spotting other primates, don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife.

7. Gardening Gloves

When trekking through dense forest areas, gardening gloves will be helpful for gripping trees and branches, providing you with better stability and protection from sharp objects.

8. Raincoat

Since Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a rainforest, rain can come unexpectedly. Carrying a raincoat will ensure you stay dry during sudden downpours.

9. Mosquito Repellent

As a forested area, Bwindi has a variety of insects, including mosquitoes. Mosquito repellent is essential to protect yourself from bites, especially when trekking early in the morning or late in the evening.

10. Sunscreen (Optional)

Though not always necessary, applying sunscreen is a good idea during hot days to protect your skin from sunburn.

11. Neutral Colors

Avoid wearing bright colors like red orange or white, as they can scare away the gorillas. Black and blue are also not recommended since they attract Tsetse flies. Instead, opt for neutral tones like brown, green or khaki to blend in with the natural environment.
