Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Africa

Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Africa — Are you dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the majestic mountain gorillas? Gorilla trekking in Africa offers an unforgettable wildlife adventure in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). Despite the costs and physical challenges, trekking through lush forests to see these endangered apes in their natural habitat is truly one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences you can have.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, often challenging terrain and crossing rivers and swamps to find gorilla families. The trek is physically demanding, requiring participants to be in good health. However, the reward is incredible—an hour spent observing these fascinating creatures up close, in their natural environment.

For those seeking a deeper connection with the gorillas, Gorilla Habituation Experience offers an extended, 4-hour encounter with semi-habituated gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place?

Gorilla trekking is available in three African countries:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park.
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Biega National Park (home to both Mountain and Lowland gorillas).

To participate in a trek, you need a gorilla permit, which must be booked in advance due to high demand, especially during the peak trekking seasons of June to September. It’s recommended to book at least 5 months in advance. You can book directly with the park authorities or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo

Here’s an overview of the cost of gorilla permits across the three countries:

Uganda

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek.
• Residents: $700 per person.
• East African Citizens: $80 per person.

Uganda offers 18 habituated gorilla families, with 136 permits available daily. If you want to spend more time with the gorillas, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, which costs $1500 for a 4-hour trek with semi-habituated gorillas. Permits can be purchased through Uganda Wildlife Authority or a tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Rwanda

• Foreign Non-Residents: $1500 per person per trek.
• Foreign Residents: $500 per person.
• East African Citizens: $200 per person.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 gorilla families and 96 permits are available each day. You can book permits directly through the Rwanda Development Board or through Trek Africa Gorillas.

DR Congo

• Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas):
  • High Season (Dec-Mar, Jun-Oct): $400 per person.
  • Low Season (Mar-May, Oct-Dec): $200 per person.
• Kahuzi Biega National Park (Lowland Gorillas):
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $400 per person.
  • East African Residents: $200 per person.
  • National Residents: $20 per person.

Permits for both parks can be booked through Virunga National Park or a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking Age Limits and Accessibility

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum age is typically 85 years, depending on an individual’s fitness level. For older travelers or those with limited mobility, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi Forest. These chairs are carried by porters, allowing participants to be transported to and from the trekking area. The cost for renting a sedan chair ranges from $400 to $500 and they can be booked in advance or on the day of the trek.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo

When planning your gorilla trek, obtaining a gorilla permit is essential. It’s important to ensure that you can use the permit on the scheduled date, as cancellations are subject to strict penalties. In Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the cancellation policy is the same:

• If you cancel your gorilla permit within 0 to 8 days of your scheduled trek, no refund will be provided.
• It is crucial to plan your trip carefully and confirm your booking before making any payments, as gorilla permits are non-refundable once issued.

Best Seasons for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year but the best time to visit is during the drier months, typically from January to February and June to early September. During this period, the conditions are more favorable for trekking, as the trails are less muddy and the vegetation is not as dense, making it easier to spot the gorillas.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through challenging terrain, so it’s important to be prepared with the right gear. Here’s a list of essential items to pack for your trek:
