Why Take a Road Trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, attracting travelers from around the world. Taking a road trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park allows you to immerse yourself in the beautiful and diverse landscapes of southwestern Uganda as you journey toward this incredible destination. The drive offers scenic views of rolling hills, local villages and lush greenery, building anticipation for the adventure ahead.

Another great reason to take the road trip is the opportunity to engage with local communities along the way, learning about their culture and traditions firsthand. This enriches your travel experience and supports sustainable tourism that benefits the people living near the park.

The journey to find these endangered creatures involves trekking through thick forests, crossing rivers and navigating rugged terrain, which is both physically challenging and incredibly rewarding. Upon reaching the gorillas, you’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable hour-long encounter with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. For those looking to deepen their experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi allows you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into their behavior and social interactions.

Where Can You Trek Gorillas in Africa?

While Uganda and Rwanda are the primary destinations for mountain gorilla trekking, you can also find gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main gorilla trekking sites are:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for Lowland gorillas)

To trek gorillas, you must have a permit, which is in high demand. We recommend booking your trek as early as possible—especially during peak season (June to September)—to secure your spot.

The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda varies:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
