Discover the Rushaga Sector: Gorilla Families and Unique Habituation Experience

Located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Rushaga is home to 8 gorilla families—the highest number in any sector of Bwindi. This makes it a popular choice for gorilla trekking enthusiasts. The habituated gorilla groups in Rushaga include Bweza, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye and Nshongi, among others.

Rushaga is also unique because it offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, an extraordinary opportunity to spend up to 4 hours with a gorilla family undergoing habituation. The families currently available for this experience are Bushaho and Bikyingi.

The Rushaga region is known for its relatively easier trekking trails and can be conveniently accessed from Kisoro or even from Kigali, Rwanda, making it ideal for travelers coming from both Uganda and Rwanda.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

To ensure a comfortable and successful trek, here’s a list of recommended gear and clothing:

• Long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against insects and plants
• Waterproof hiking boots for slippery terrain
• Raincoat or poncho, as rain is unpredictable in Bwindi
• Gardening gloves for gripping trees and branches during the trek
• A hat and sunglasses (optional) for sun protection
• Mosquito repellent to guard against insects
• Binoculars for bird watching and spotting primates
• Cameras with extra batteries (remember to turn off the flash)

Tip: Avoid bright colors, as they can startle the gorillas. Neutral colors like khaki, green and brown are ideal. Additionally, steer clear of black and blue clothing as they attract tsetse flies.

Best Time to Visit Rushaga for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga is available year-round but the dry seasons (June–August and December–February) are ideal. During these months, the trails are drier and easier to navigate.

If you prefer fewer crowds and discounted accommodation rates, consider visiting during the low season (March–May and November), though you should be prepared for occasional rainfall.
