Rwanda Gorilla Tours in March: Your Complete Planning Guide

Are you dreaming of a trip to Africa to experience the thrill of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat? A Rwanda gorilla tour in March offers an unforgettable adventure in the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park. Trekking to see these majestic creatures is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences.

Mountain gorillas are gentle giants, known for their peaceful nature. During your trek, you’ll witness them interact with one another and occasionally, they may approach you out of curiosity. Spending an hour with these incredible animals is truly magical and worth every effort.

Here’s everything you need to know about planning your Rwanda gorilla tour in March.

Why Visit Volcanoes National Park for Gorilla Trekking in March?

Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc des Volcans in French or Pariki y’Igihugu y’Ibirunga in Kinyarwanda, is located in northeastern Rwanda, near the small town of Musanze. It’s one of Africa’s oldest national parks and a haven for endangered species, including mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.

Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, the park is home to five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. It’s a biodiversity hotspot with numerous primates, bird species, forest hogs, bushbucks and stunning flora.

March falls within Rwanda’s rainy season but don’t let that deter you. The lush green forest is at its most beautiful and you’ll encounter fewer crowds, making your gorilla trekking experience even more intimate.

Gorilla Trekking Permits in Volcanoes National Park: Availability and Costs

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Daily?

Volcanoes National Park offers 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking each day. Each family can be visited by a maximum of 8 visitors per day, meaning there are only 80 gorilla permits available daily. This ensures a sustainable and exclusive experience.

Gorilla trekking begins with a briefing at the Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00 AM. You’ll be guided by expert trackers and rangers who will lead you to the gorillas’ location, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on their movements.

Cost of a Rwanda Gorilla Permit

A gorilla trekking permit for Volcanoes National Park costs $1,500 per person for all nationalities. This fee allows you to spend one magical hour observing the gorillas and taking photos.

Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during the high season (January, February, July, August, September and December), as permits sell out quickly.
