Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in February

Experience Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park

Planning a trip to Africa to see the incredible mountain gorillas? If you’re considering gorilla trekking in Rwanda this February, you’re in for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Trekking to see these majestic creatures in Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s most unforgettable travel experiences.

Why Choose February for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

February is a fantastic time to visit Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking. The weather is typically dry, making the trails less slippery and easier to navigate. Plus, it’s a quieter time compared to the peak tourist months, meaning you can enjoy a more intimate experience with nature.

Mountain gorillas are known for their gentle demeanor. These remarkable primates often interact with visitors, sometimes even approaching or playfully touching guides as they move past. Spending an hour with a gorilla family is a magical and humbling experience—one that’s worth every penny of the gorilla permit fee.

However, trekking to their habitat in the bamboo forests isn’t without challenges. It involves navigating steep slopes, dense vegetation and high-altitude conditions. But rest assured, the experience of meeting these endangered creatures in their natural environment makes it all worthwhile.

Explore the Wonders of Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, known locally as Parc des Volcans in French and Pariki y’Igihugu y’Ibirunga in Kinyarwanda, is located in Musanze, northern Rwanda. As one of Africa’s oldest national parks, it’s home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, along with golden monkeys, forest hogs, bushbucks and over 180 bird species.

The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes—Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. Beyond its wildlife, the park also offers a glimpse into Rwanda’s vibrant culture.

Gorilla tourism in Volcanoes National Park has significantly contributed to Rwanda’s economic growth, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Trekking to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Daily?

Every day, Volcanoes National Park allows up to 80 visitors to trek gorillas, divided into groups of 8 for each of the 10 habituated gorilla families. Permits are in high demand, especially during peak seasons, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

Gorilla trekking starts at 7:00 a.m. in Kinigi with a briefing on safety guidelines. Even though mountain gorillas share 99% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals and strict rules are in place to protect both the gorillas and visitors. Trekking can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas on the day of your trek.

Cost of a Rwanda Gorilla Permit

A Rwanda gorilla permit costs $1,500 per person, granting you an unforgettable hour with a gorilla family. The permit fee includes park entry, guides, trackers and security.

While the price might seem steep, the funds play a vital role in conserving these endangered animals and supporting local communities. Trek Africa Gorillas can assist you in securing permits and planning a memorable gorilla trekking experience tailored to your budget and preferences.
