Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Low Season: A Unique and Affordable Adventure

Experience Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda’s Low Season

Are you dreaming of visiting Africa to witness the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat? Considering a gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda during the low season is a fantastic choice. Trekking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is an unforgettable experience, often regarded as one of Africa’s top travel highlights.

Why Choose Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Low Season?

Low season, typically between March to May and October to November, offers several advantages for travelers:

1. Fewer Crowds: Enjoy a more intimate trekking experience with less competition for permits.
2. Better Prices: Some lodges and tour packages offer discounts during the low season, making it a more affordable option.
3. Lush Scenery: The rainy season transforms the park into a vibrant green paradise, perfect for photography enthusiasts.

Mountain gorillas are remarkably peaceful creatures. During your trek, you may witness them interacting with each other and occasionally, they may approach or acknowledge your presence in a remarkable way. The one-hour encounter with these incredible primates is worth every effort it takes to reach them.

Explore Volcanoes National Park: Home of Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park, known locally as Parc National des Volcans, is nestled in the Musanze region of northwestern Rwanda. This park is a cornerstone of Rwanda’s tourism, known for its dense bamboo forests, extinct volcanoes and diverse wildlife.

In addition to mountain gorillas, the park is home to golden monkeys, numerous bird species, forest hogs, bushbucks and a rich cultural heritage. It’s part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes:

• Mount Karisimbi
• Mount Bisoke
• Mount Sabyinyo
• Mount Gahinga
• Mount Muhabura

Trekking through the park’s unique landscapes to encounter mountain gorillas is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available in Volcanoes National Park?

Volcanoes National Park has 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, with a maximum of 8 visitors allowed per family each day. This means there are 80 permits available daily, ensuring a sustainable and intimate experience.

Trekking starts at 7:00 AM with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi. Rangers and guides lead you into the forest, ensuring both your safety and the protection of the gorillas. While the trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, the 99% chance of seeing them makes it all worthwhile.

How Much Does a Rwanda Gorilla Permit Cost?

A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person, regardless of nationality. This permit allows you one hour with the gorillas, providing ample time for observation and photography. While it may seem costly, this fee contributes directly to the conservation of these endangered creatures and supports local communities.
