Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Peak Season

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Peak Season: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Why Choose Peak Season for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

Are you dreaming of visiting Africa to see the majestic mountain gorillas? If so, Rwanda gorilla trekking during the peak season is an exceptional adventure to consider. Exploring the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is an unrivaled primate experience and one of Africa’s most unforgettable travel highlights.

Gorilla trekking requires a valid permit, as it provides access to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Mountain gorillas are surprisingly peaceful animals, often curious about their visitors. They may approach you or even interact with your guides as they pass by—a truly magical encounter.

The journey to meet these gorillas involves trekking through steep bamboo forests, navigating dense vegetation and overcoming slippery paths, particularly after rain. However, the reward is an extraordinary hour spent in the presence of these gentle giants.

Explore Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park, known locally as “Parc des Volcans” in French or “Pariki y’Igihugu y’Ibirunga” in Kinyarwanda, is situated in northeastern Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. This iconic park is one of Africa’s oldest and most significant conservation areas.

Home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, the park also boasts a wide range of wildlife, including various bird species, bushbucks, forest hogs and more. Part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, the park includes five extinct volcanoes: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura and Mount Sabyinyo.

Gorilla tourism has become a cornerstone of Rwanda’s conservation efforts and economic growth, drawing travelers from around the world to experience this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Each Day?

Gorilla trekking allows you to visit one of the 10 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park. Each family can be visited by a maximum of eight people per day, meaning 80 permits are available daily. With a 99% chance of spotting the gorillas, your trek is guided by expert trackers, guides and park rangers.

The experience begins every morning at 7:00 a.m. in Kinigi, where visitors are briefed on safety and trekking guidelines. Although gorillas share 99% of human DNA, they remain wild animals, so adhering to the guides’ instructions is essential for a safe and rewarding encounter. Depending on the gorillas’ location, the trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

What Is the Cost of a Rwanda Gorilla Permit?

To participate in a gorilla trek, you must purchase a gorilla permit from the Rwanda Development Board. Each permit costs $1,500 and grants you one hour to observe and photograph the gorillas. While the cost may seem high, the experience is priceless, offering a chance to tick this unforgettable adventure off your bucket list.

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we specialize in helping travelers secure permits and design personalized, memorable tours to Volcanoes National Park.
