Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in September

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in September: A Guide to an Unforgettable Adventure

Are you dreaming of visiting Africa to witness the iconic mountain gorillas and considering Rwanda gorilla trekking in September? Exploring the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the most incredible highlights of travel in Africa. These gentle giants are peaceful and surprisingly interactive, often approaching visitors or even playfully touching guides as they move through the forest.

Spending an hour with these endangered gorillas is a magical experience, though it requires a gorilla trekking permit to secure your spot. Trekking through their natural habitat in the bamboo forest involves navigating steep slopes, dense vegetation and sometimes slippery terrain, especially after rain. Despite the challenge, the reward is unparalleled.

Why September Is the Best Time to Visit Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, known as Parc des Volcans in French and Pariki y’Igihugu y’Ibirunga in Kinyarwanda, is located in Musanze, northeastern Rwanda. As one of Africa’s oldest national parks, it is a key destination for gorilla trekking. The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga.

Home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and over 200 bird species, the park offers a rich biodiversity. Gorilla tourism has not only contributed significantly to Rwanda’s economy but has also provided travelers with a unique opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their natural environment. September, a dry season month, is one of the best times for gorilla trekking due to favorable weather conditions and easier trails.

Gorilla Permits: Availability and Trekking Guidelines

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a carefully managed activity to ensure the safety and conservation of the gorillas. The park has 10 habituated gorilla families, with only 8 visitors allowed per family per day. This means a total of 80 permits are available daily.

The trek begins with a briefing at 7:00 AM in Kinigi, where guides explain the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. Although gorillas share 99% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals, so it’s important to follow the park’s guidelines. Trek durations vary, ranging from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla families.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs

To participate in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, you’ll need a gorilla permit, which costs $1,500 USD per person. This fee allows you one hour of interaction with the gorillas and supports conservation efforts.

Booking your permit well in advance, especially for September, is highly recommended since permits sell out quickly during the high season. Trek Africa Gorillas can assist in securing your permit and planning an affordable, tailored gorilla trekking experience.
