Rwanda Photography Tour: Capture the Heart of Nature

Rwanda is renowned worldwide for its stunning wildlife, particularly its mountain gorillas and chimpanzees but it also boasts a treasure trove of birdwatching opportunities. With over 750 bird species—including many unique species endemic to the Albertine Rift—Rwanda is one of the top destinations for bird photography and filming. Whether you’re an experienced photographer or a film enthusiast, Rwanda offers exciting, diverse locations for capturing both birdlife and wildlife in their natural habitats.

Top Photography Locations in Rwanda for Birds and Wildlife

Here are some of the best spots in Rwanda for photographing stunning birds and wildlife:

1. The Albertine Eco-region

The Albertine Rift, formed by volcanic activity, is home to over 40 bird species, including 27 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. This region is perfect for photographers looking to capture unique birds in their natural environment.

2. Volcanoes National Park

Famous for its mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is a haven for photographers. In addition to over 165 bird species, including 17 endemics, the park also offers opportunities to capture golden monkeys and other primates, depending on your trail. Volcanoes National Park provides an unforgettable setting for both birdwatching and wildlife filming.

3. Nyungwe Forest National Park

Known for its breathtaking scenery, Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s best spots for bird photography. Home to over 310 bird species, including 27 Albertine Rift endemics, it’s a bird lover’s paradise. Key species to photograph here include the Regal Sunbird, Rwenzori Turaco and Blue-headed Sunbird. The forest is also renowned for its tea plantations, which offer unique photo opportunities.

4. Akagera National Park

With over 500 bird species recorded, including the Red-faced Barbet and White-collared Oliveback, Akagera National Park is a fantastic destination for bird photographers. The park also offers the rare chance to capture the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos—alongside the diverse birdlife.

Best Time for a Rwanda Photography Tour

The ideal time for bird photography in Rwanda is during the months of June to August, when the fig trees bear fruit, attracting a wide variety of birds. However, birdwatching in Rwanda is a year-round activity, with something unique to capture throughout the seasons.
