Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Orphanage: A Unique Experience
The Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Orphanage is the world’s only center dedicated to orphaned mountain gorillas, offering a rare chance to observe these magnificent creatures up close. Named after Senkwekwe, a beloved Silverback Gorilla tragically killed in 2007, the orphanage was established to care for young gorillas whose parents have been killed by poachers or have fallen victim to poacher traps. At the center, you can watch dedicated caretakers as they feed, comfort and even hug the young gorillas, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
Virunga National Park, home to around 1,000 mountain gorillas, is Africa’s oldest national park and the gorillas’ natural habitat. However, the park faces constant threats from poaching, illegal activities and militant groups. The orphanage plays a vital role in protecting and rehabilitating gorillas like Ndakazi and Ndeze, the first orphans cared for here after losing their families to poaching 12 years ago.
How to Get to the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage
To reach the Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Orphanage, fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda. From there, you’ll travel to Gisenyi town, then cross the Rwanda-Congo border into Goma.
