About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in southern Uganda along the border with DR Congo, Bwindi is home to more than half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas, making it one of the top destinations for gorilla trekking. Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors:

• Buhoma
• Ruhija
• Rushaga
• Nkuringo

Each sector features habituated gorilla families open for trekking. A gorilla family typically consists of multiple individuals, led by a dominant silverback male. Gorilla trekking permits are limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day, ensuring a safe and sustainable experience. To secure your trek, you must book a valid permit for your chosen date.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek

Gorilla trekking begins at 7:00 AM with a briefing from park rangers about trekking rules and safety precautions. Afterward, experienced guides and trackers lead you into the forest to locate a gorilla family. Once found, you’ll have a magical one hour to observe these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

The trek can be challenging, with uphill climbs and uneven terrain but the experience is worth every step. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate of participation, marking your successful adventure.

Did you know? Gorillas share 95% of their DNA with humans, making them fascinating to watch as they interact, feed and care for their young.
