Best Time to Book Student Budget Gorilla Treks in Uganda

The summer holidays in Europe and other parts of the northern hemisphere align with the dry seasons in Uganda and Rwanda, making it an ideal time to visit. However, this is also considered high season, which means that gorilla permits and accommodations in popular lodges can sell out quickly. The best time to book your student gorilla trek is now.

We recommend planning your trip well in advance, ideally a year before, to secure gorilla permits and avoid disappointment. If you’re reading this post now, feel free to send us your preferred travel dates between June and September for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park. We’ll check availability and help you secure your permits.

When it comes to booking gorilla permits, we’ll provide an update on availability for the specified dates. If everything aligns, we’ll guide you through the payment process. Trek Africa Gorillas operates a Dollar account and accepts payments via bank transfers, wire transfers and debit/credit cards (please note that card payments attract a surcharge).

How to Confirm Your Gorilla Trek with Trek Africa Gorillas

To confirm your summer holiday gorilla trekking tour, we will need full payment for the gorilla permits upfront to secure them. The balance of your tour package will be due three weeks before your safari. This arrangement allows you to organize your payments while knowing that your gorilla permit – the key to your gorilla trekking experience – is already secured.

As one of the few registered and trusted Ugandan tour operators with direct access to the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s gorilla permit database, Trek Africa Gorillas can check the availability of permits in Bwindi and Mgahinga at any time. Once your payment is confirmed, we will send someone to the Uganda Wildlife Authority office in Kampala to process the permit, collect a booking ID and provide you with a receipt. We will then send you a scanned copy for your records.

When your gorilla permits are printed, we will keep them safe in our office until the day of your trek. Your guide will present the permit card during the trek, which contains all the necessary details.

What’s Included in Our Student Budget Gorilla Trek Packages

At Trek Africa Gorillas, all our gorilla trekking packages for students are fully inclusive of the following:

• Gorilla permits
• Accommodation
• Transport (to and from Entebbe or Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park)

Gorilla Permit: What’s Included and What’s Not

A gorilla permit is a must-have for anyone trekking to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park. It grants you access to see the endangered mountain gorillas for an unforgettable experience.

Your gorilla permit covers:

• One hour spent with a habituated mountain gorilla family
• Photography and basic video recording during your trek
• An informative talk from your guide
• The services of a ranger guide and park entry fees

The permit also includes the presence of tourism police for added safety and a ranger (armed with an AK47) to ensure security in the forest.

Please note: Gorilla permits are valid only on the date they’re booked and you must be present for the trek. Once expired, they cannot be used.

Gorilla Habituation Permit: What’s Included and What’s Not

If you’re looking to spend more time with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is the perfect option for you. Unlike the standard gorilla trekking permit, which allows for one hour with the gorillas, the gorilla habituation experience lets you spend up to four hours with these incredible creatures. This extended interaction gives you a unique opportunity to observe gorillas as they are being habituated to human presence, offering a deeper, more immersive experience.

Currently, there are two gorilla families in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park reserved for this experience. Additionally, reports suggest that another family is being habituated in the northern section of the park, specifically for those staying in the Buhoma and Ruhija regions.

Upon completing the experience, you will receive a certificate to confirm your participation. This not only acknowledges your visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park but also supports mountain gorilla conservation. A portion of the permit fee goes towards protecting the gorillas and funding the work of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Additionally, your contribution benefits local communities, as part of the proceeds help fund vital projects like schools, hospitals and job creation in the area.

What’s Included in the Gorilla Habituation Permit

A gorilla habituation permit includes:

• Four hours with a habituated gorilla family
• An informative talk from your guide about gorilla behavior and conservation efforts
• Photography and video recording during your time with the gorillas
• The services of a ranger guide and tourism police for security
• Park entry fees for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park, valid for the day

Please note that the permit does not cover accommodation or transport. But don’t worry, Trek Africa Gorillas is here to take care of your accommodation and transport arrangements to make your gorilla trekking experience hassle-free.
