Best Time to Book Your Summer Gorilla Trekking Tour

Summer in the northern hemisphere coincides with the drier season in Uganda and Rwanda, making it the ideal time for a gorilla trekking safari. However, it’s important to note that the dry season also falls during peak tourism months, meaning gorilla permits and accommodations tend to sell out quickly.

If you’re planning to travel during the summer months (June to September), the best time to book your gorilla trekking tour is now. We recommend scheduling your tour at least a year in advance to secure your gorilla permits and accommodations. If you’re reading this now and have a specific month in mind, let us know! We’ll check availability for your desired travel dates to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park.

Once we confirm availability, we’ll promptly inform you via email. To proceed, we’ll guide you through the payment process and we accept both bank transfers and credit/debit card payments (with a small surcharge for card payments). Our dollar account allows us to handle payments efficiently.

To confirm your booking, we ask for payment of the gorilla permits upfront to secure them, with the remaining balance due three weeks before your safari. This payment structure ensures you can plan your budget well in advance, knowing your gorilla permit is already secured.

Trek Africa Gorillas is one of the few trusted tour operators with direct access to the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s (UWA) gorilla permit database. This means we can instantly check the availability of permits across Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks, giving you real-time updates. Once your payment is made, we’ll handle the rest—collecting your permit directly from UWA and ensuring everything is in place for your trip.

Gorilla Permit: What’s Included and What’s Not

If you’re planning to visit Africa this summer for a gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park, it’s important to secure your gorilla permit well in advance. Permits are in high demand, especially during peak season, so booking early is essential to ensure you don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A gorilla permit is an official card issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that grants you access to either Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park to track and observe the endangered mountain gorillas. With a permit, you’ll have the chance to spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family, during which you can take photographs and videos (within guidelines). Your guide will also provide an informative talk about the gorillas and the forest environment.

What’s Included with Your Gorilla Permit:

• One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family: Experience the awe of being up close to these incredible creatures.
• Ranger guide and tourism police: A trained guide will accompany you on your trek, ensuring your safety and enriching your experience. A member of the tourism police, equipped with security gear, will also be present to ensure your safety and that of the gorillas.
• Park entry fees: The permit covers the entry fees to Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park, valid for 24 hours.

Note: The gorilla permit is valid only for the date specified, so make sure you’re available to trek on the day you’ve booked. Once the date passes, the permit cannot be used.

Gorilla Habituation Permit: What’s Included and What’s Not

For those looking for an even more immersive experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience allows you to spend up to four hours with mountain gorillas. This experience is perfect for those who want to observe gorillas for longer, gaining deeper insights into their behavior and interactions.

Currently, there are two gorilla families in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park that are available for the habituation experience. Unconfirmed reports suggest another family is being habituated in the northern section of Bwindi, providing options for trekkers staying in the Buhoma and Ruhija regions.

What’s Included with the Gorilla Habituation Permit:

• Up to 4 hours with mountain gorillas: Enjoy an extended time to observe these majestic animals.
• Certificate of participation: After your trek, you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and your support for mountain gorilla conservation.
• Contribution to conservation: Part of your permit fee goes toward gorilla conservation and local community development, supporting projects like schools, hospitals and job creation.

What’s Not Included:

While the gorilla habituation permit covers your trek and park entry, it does not include accommodation or transport to and from the park. That’s where Trek Africa Gorillas comes in. We handle all your accommodation and transport needs to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

Accommodation Options for Your Gorilla Trekking Trip

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we work with a selection of lodges around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to suit all budgets. Whether you’re looking for a budget option or a more luxurious stay, we can recommend the best accommodations for your needs. Bwindi is divided into four regions—Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo—each offering different options for your stay.

We regularly assess and visit these lodges to ensure they maintain high service standards. Share your budget with us and we’ll suggest the perfect place for you.

Transport to and from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

We understand that getting to Bwindi can be challenging, so we offer comfortable transport options for all our guests. Whether you prefer to travel in a luxury 4×4 Land Cruiser or a more economical safari van, we’ve got you covered. All vehicles are equipped with air conditioning, water and are driven by professional, experienced guides.

• Flying into Kigali (Rwanda): Many guests choose to fly into Kigali and then drive to Bwindi to avoid the long journey from Entebbe (Uganda). This route offers a smoother, quicker transfer and we can arrange airport transfers and the journey to the park.
• Flying into Entebbe (Uganda): If you choose to fly into Entebbe, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through Uganda’s Kigezi region, including stops at the equator and views of the famous Ankole long-horned cattle.

No matter where you fly into, we’ll assist with all transport arrangements to ensure your trip is hassle-free.
