Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that draws wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. Despite the challenges of cost, time and the physical effort required, the reward of seeing endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo is truly unparalleled.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is an exhilarating adventure that involves hiking through dense forests, sometimes on difficult terrain, to locate a group of mountain gorillas. These treks can be physically demanding, as they often require navigating thick vegetation, rivers and swamps. Once you reach the gorillas, you get to spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural environment. If you want an extended experience, Uganda offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, allowing you to spend up to 4 hours with these magnificent creatures.

This unique encounter gives travelers a rare glimpse into the lives of gorillas, making it one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in Africa.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

Gorilla trekking is only possible in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, home to the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas. These majestic creatures can be found in four national parks:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park in DR Congo

In addition to mountain gorillas, you can also trek to see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DR Congo, making it a unique destination for those interested in seeing both gorilla species.

When and How to Get Gorilla Trekking Permits

To participate in gorilla trekking, you must purchase a gorilla trekking permit. Due to the high demand, particularly during peak seasons from June to September, it’s crucial to book your trip at least 5 months in advance. Gorilla permits often sell out quickly, especially during these peak months, so early planning is essential to secure your spot.
