About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Home of the Mountain Gorillas
Nestled in the southern part of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park shares a border with Congo and is one of only two places on earth where you can track Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. Home to over half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas, Bwindi is a top destination for gorilla trekking.
The park is divided into four sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo. Each sector has its own unique gorilla families led by the dominant male Silverback. For your trek, you’ll need a valid gorilla permit, which allows you to visit one of the gorilla families. With only 8 visitors allowed per family per day, securing a permit is essential for this incredible experience.
Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins at 7:00 am with a briefing on safety and the rules of the trek. A guided journey into the forest follows, where you’ll search for the gorillas. Once you find them, you’ll have an hour to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat before returning to the park headquarters to receive a certificate of your successful trek.
Since gorillas share 95% of our DNA, watching them is a truly remarkable experience. To preserve the gorillas and ensure their safety, Uganda Wildlife Authority limits the number of visitors to 8 per gorilla family per day. Additionally, trekkers must be 15 years or older.
