Batwa Cultural Experience: Discover the Forest’s Original Inhabitants

The Batwa people, once known as pygmies, were the original inhabitants of the Bwindi Forest. For centuries, they lived in harmony with the forest, relying on its resources for survival through hunting, gathering wild honey and utilizing medicinal plants. However, in recent years, the Batwa were relocated from the forest to surrounding communities as part of the effort to protect the mountain gorillas and promote tourism.

On a Batwa cultural tour, you’ll get a fascinating glimpse into their way of life. The Batwa will show you where they used to live in the forest, explain how they hunted and demonstrate their traditional dances. You’ll also learn how they’ve adapted to life outside the forest and how they are now integrating into the local community. You can visit women’s groups selling crafts or enjoy a meal prepared by the locals. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to interact with the Batwa as they showcase their culture and the traditional practices they hold dear.
