Top Mountain Hiking Spots in Uganda

Top Mountain Hiking Spots in Uganda: Explore the Rwenzori Mountains and More

Uganda is home to some of Africa’s most incredible mountain hiking destinations. Among the best spots for hiking in Uganda is the Rwenzori Mountains, located along the Uganda-Congo border in western Uganda. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzoris rise to an impressive height of 5,109 meters (16,762 feet) at Mount Stanley—the highest peak in the range and the third highest mountain in Africa. The Rwenzori Mountains are renowned for their stunning glaciers and snow-capped peaks, offering a unique hiking experience on the equator.

The Rwenzori range consists of six distinct peaks: Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Gessi and Savioa. These peaks are part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which was gazetted in 1991 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Hiking in the Rwenzoris not only offers stunning views of glaciers but also the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including mammals and birds.

Best Time for Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains

The best time to hike the Rwenzori Mountains is during the dry season, typically from June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails are drier and more accessible, making hiking easier and more enjoyable. Roads leading to the Rwenzoris are also in better condition during these times. However, as you ascend to higher altitudes, you may still encounter occasional drizzles, slippery conditions and cooler temperatures. It’s essential to pack suitable hiking gear to make your trek more comfortable and safe.

Combine Rwenzori Hiking with Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure, consider combining hiking the Rwenzori Mountains with a gorilla trekking experience. You can start your journey with a visit to either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a thrilling gorilla trek before heading to the Rwenzoris for your mountain adventure. Alternatively, you can choose to start with the hike and then complete your journey with gorilla trekking.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Top Locations and What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a life-changing experience, taking place in four sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. Buhoma and Ruhija are located in the northern and northeastern parts of Bwindi, close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, making them ideal for combining gorilla trekking with game viewing. The Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors are in the southern part of Bwindi and near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where you can also enjoy golden monkey tracking. Each sector is home to different habituated gorilla families, with Rushaga having the most families available for trekking.

Cost of Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

• USD 800 per person for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 for East African Residents
• USD 80 for East African Citizens

This permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas once you encounter them during your trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

How to Book Your Gorilla Trekking Permit

Booking your gorilla trekking experience in Uganda requires securing your gorilla permit in advance. Permits can be purchased directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) at their headquarters in Kampala or in Kisoro for those arriving through Kigali. For tourists entering Uganda via Entebbe, we recommend purchasing permits from the UWA office in Kampala, while those arriving through Kigali can purchase theirs at the UWA office in Kisoro, which is a short drive from Bwindi.

Best Time of Year for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the drier months from January to February and June to early September. These months offer better trekking conditions, as the trails are more accessible and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot gorillas. Additionally, the dry weather facilitates comfortable travel to the parks and clearer views of the gorillas and stunning surroundings.

What to Pack: Gorilla Trekking Gear and Essentials

Wondering what to pack for your gorilla trek in Uganda? Here’s a list of essential items to wear and bring along to ensure comfort and preparedness:

• Long-sleeved sweater: The park can get chilly, so bring a warm sweater to stay comfortable.
• Two pairs of long trousers: Opt for lightweight, breathable trousers to protect from undergrowth.
• Waterproof hiking boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots are essential for muddy and uneven trails.
• Hat and sunglasses: Optional but helpful during sunny weather.
• Camera with long-lasting batteries: Photography is a key part of your trek; remember to turn off your flash.
• Binoculars: Useful for spotting birds and other primates in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
• Gardening gloves: Handy for holding onto trees or branches while navigating the forest.
• Raincoat: Since Bwindi Forest is a rainforest, rain is unpredictable; carry a lightweight raincoat.
• Mosquito repellent: Protects against forest insects.
• Sunscreen: Prevents sunburn during hotter months.
• Avoid bright colors: These may scare gorillas; also, black and blue attract Tsetse flies, so opt for neutral colors like greens, browns or khakis.
