Top Things to Do in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Are you planning to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and wondering what activities to enjoy after your gorilla trek? Mgahinga is a fantastic destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers and those wanting to immerse themselves in Uganda’s unique culture. Known for its breathtaking volcano hikes and gorilla trekking, Mgahinga offers plenty of exciting activities to complement your adventure. Here are some of the top things to do in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park:

1. Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga is a unique experience, as the park is home to only one gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Group. Unlike other parts of Bwindi, Mgahinga offers a more intimate gorilla trekking experience. With only 8 permits available per day, it’s crucial to book your trek in advance to secure your spot. Permits for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga cost the same as in Bwindi:

• $800 for foreign non-residents
• $700 for foreign residents
• 300,000 UGX for East African residents.

2. Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden Monkey Tracking is another exciting activity you can enjoy in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Unlike gorilla trekking, which is also available in this park, golden monkey tracking focuses on the endangered golden monkeys that call this area home. The tracking begins with a briefing and then you’ll head out into the forest in search of these lively primates. Golden monkey tracking permits are available and can be purchased upon arrival at the park.

3. Golden Monkey Habituation for a More Immersive Experience

If you’re looking for an even more immersive experience with golden monkeys, consider the Golden Monkey Habituation program. This activity gives you the chance to spend more time with semi-habituated golden monkeys and participate in activities designed to make them accustomed to human presence. Like tracking, this activity begins in the morning with a briefing and permits are available at the park headquarters.

4. Batwa Cultural Trail Experience

One of the best cultural activities in Mgahinga is the Batwa Cultural Trail. Led by a Batwa guide, you’ll learn about the traditional forest life of the Batwa people who once lived in the Mgahinga Forest. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the region and this experience gives you a chance to step into their shoes. During the tour, you’ll enjoy traditional dances, fire-making and other fascinating aspects of the Batwa’s Stone Age lifestyle. It’s a great way to understand the deep connection between the Batwa people and the forest. Cost: $80 per person.

5. Nature Walks in Gahinga Forest

After your gorilla trek, take a peaceful nature walk through the Gahinga Forest. This walk offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about the diverse tree species and other wildlife in the area. It’s a relaxing and informative activity, perfect for nature enthusiasts.

6. Village Walk Around Kisoro

For a deeper dive into local life, take a village walk through Kisoro, the nearby town. This walk will take you through local markets, where you can interact with the community and learn about the Bafumbira and Bakiga tribes. You’ll also get a chance to experience traditional cultural dances, sample local foods and see local arts and crafts.

7. Birdwatching in Mgahinga

Mgahinga is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 127 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or a casual nature lover, you’ll enjoy spotting these beautiful species while exploring the park’s diverse habitats. The area is ideal for both birding walks and more intensive birding excursions.

8. Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

While Mgahinga is best known for its gorillas and golden monkeys, the park is also home to 76 species of mammals, including buffaloes, elephants, duikers and leopards. Although wildlife sightings can be rare due to the park’s steep terrain and the nocturnal nature of many species, you might spot tracks and signs of these animals during your trek or hike.

9. Local Community Visits for Cultural Insights

Explore the culture of the people living around the park through local community visits. These visits provide insights into the lives of the Bakiga and Batwa pygmy communities, offering a deeper understanding of the region’s rich heritage. You’ll have the chance to interact with local families, learn about their traditions and enjoy storytelling around a campfire.

10. Other Exciting Activities in Mgahinga

• Yoga at the Lodge: Relax your muscles after a day of hiking.
• Mountain Biking: Take a guided bike tour through the beautiful landscapes surrounding the park.
• Volunteering: Participate in community projects at local schools or other initiatives.
• Butterfly Watching: Enjoy this tranquil activity at night, as the park is home to many butterfly species.
