This region is home to three incredible gorilla families, each with its own unique story and charm. In this guide to the Top Things to Do in Nkuringo After Your Gorilla Trek, we explore how you can make the most of your visit.

Meet the Nkuringo Gorilla Families

• Nkuringo Gorilla Family: The first family to be habituated in this sector in 1997, Nkuringo was opened to trekkers in 2004. The family is named after the local area, which means “Hills.” Originally consisting of 19 members, the group now has 12 members. The family was led by Rafiki, whose name means “Friend” in Swahili, until his passing in 2008. Notably, this family was the first to have twins in 2004, though sadly one of the twins passed away.
• Bushaho Gorilla Family: With 9 members, the Bushaho family was habituated in 2016. Like other gorilla groups, the family could grow as new babies are born or if the dominant Silverback successfully integrates other wild mountain gorillas into the group. The addition of Bushaho increased the total number of gorilla families in Bwindi to 17, making Uganda one of the top destinations to see mountain gorillas in the wild.
• Christmas Gorilla Family: The Christmas family, the newest addition to Nkuringo’s gorilla families, has about 9 members, with 6 commonly seen on treks. Led by the dominant Silverback “Christmas,” the group also includes one blackback, three females and one baby. This group is famous for its occasional forays into neighboring villages in search of food.
