About Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwest of Rwanda, near the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s home to the endangered mountain gorillas, making it one of the world’s most famous destinations for gorilla trekking. The park is also part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of five volcanic mountains and is home to over 200 bird species, Golden Monkeys and other rare mammals.

1. Gorilla Trekking – A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Arguably the most iconic activity in Volcanoes National Park, gorilla trekking is an unforgettable experience. Every day, groups of eight visitors set out to track one of the park’s 12 habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a hike through the lush forest to find the gorillas. Depending on the location and movement of the gorillas, the trek can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day.

To participate in gorilla trekking, you need to purchase a gorilla permit (USD $1500 per person), which grants access to one of the gorilla families for a one-hour encounter. Permits can be booked directly with the Rwanda Development Board or through agencies like Trek Africa Gorillas.

2. Golden Monkey Tracking – A Unique Wildlife Encounter

Another unique experience at Volcanoes National Park is Golden Monkey Tracking. These endangered primates are found in only a few places worldwide, including Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The tracking experience is similar to gorilla trekking but focuses on the elusive golden monkeys. Visitors typically track a family of golden monkeys in groups of up to 16. A Golden Monkey permit costs USD $100 per person.

3. Volcano Climbing – Explore the Virunga Massif

Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanic mountains that make up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. The most popular climb is Mount Karisimbi, the highest of the five, offering spectacular views of the surrounding region and a crater lake at the summit. Volcano climbing is a more strenuous activity but the breathtaking panoramas and the sense of achievement make it all worth it.

4. Visit Dian Fossey’s Tomb – A Tribute to Conservation

A hike to Dian Fossey’s Tomb is a poignant and educational experience. Fossey was a pioneering conservationist who dedicated her life to protecting the mountain gorillas in the region. At the tomb, you can visit her grave, located next to her favorite gorilla, Digit and learn about the tragic events surrounding her murder in 1985. This hike not only offers a chance to reflect on her legacy but also to explore the beautiful scenery of the park.
