Top Uganda Forests to See Primates: A Guide to Primate Safaris

Uganda is one of the best destinations for primate safaris in Africa, offering an incredible chance to see some of the world’s most endangered primates in their natural habitats. From Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest and Budongo Forest, Uganda boasts an abundance of primate species. You can also encounter the Golden Monkeys in Mgahinga and even the Patas monkey in the northern regions of Kidepo National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. Many travelers have described their experience with Uganda’s primates as unforgettable, magical and life-changing—and it’s worth every penny spent.

Best Uganda Forests for Primate Viewing

Uganda’s forests are some of the most biodiverse in the world, making it a prime destination for those interested in primate trekking. The top places to visit for primate safaris include:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Home to the iconic Mountain Gorillas.
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: See both Mountain Gorillas and the rare Golden Monkeys.
• Kibale Forest National Park: Known for its population of Chimpanzees and other primates.
• Budongo Forest: A haven for Chimpanzees and a variety of monkeys.
• Kalinzu Forest: A lesser-known gem for Chimpanzee trekking.
• Kyambura Gorge: A stunning location in the Queen Elizabeth National Park for Chimpanzee trekking.

When is the Best Time to See Primates in Uganda?

The best time to visit Uganda for primate safaris is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to March. During this period, rainfall is minimal, making it easier to trek through Uganda’s forests. The vegetation is also less dense, offering better visibility for primate sightings and great photo opportunities.

While April, May and November are wetter months, trekking is still possible. In fact, shorter treks are often a benefit during the wet season, as primates tend to stay closer to the forest due to the abundance of food. Though the foliage may be denser, the chance of seeing primates remains high, with a 99% success rate year-round.

What is the Cost of a Primate Safari in Uganda?

The cost of a primate safari in Uganda varies depending on the species you want to see, the length of your stay and the specific national parks you choose to visit. The most significant cost is the permit price, which is required for every trek.

• Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permit:
  • USD 800 for non-residents
  • USD 700 for residents
  • UGX 300,000 for East African citizens
This permit allows you to spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga National Parks.
• Gorilla Habituation Permit:
  • USD 1500 for foreign non-residents
  • USD 1000 for foreign residents
  • UGX 750,000 for East African citizens
Spend 4 hours with semi-habituated mountain gorillas, a more immersive experience.
• Chimpanzee Trekking Permit:
  • USD 250 for non-residents
  • USD 200 for residents
  • UGX 180,000 for East African citizens
This permit grants you 1 hour with Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest or other primate-rich forests.

Additional costs may include accommodation, transport and guiding fees but the experience of encountering these primates in the wild is worth every penny.

Is a Primate Safari in Uganda Worth the Investment?

Absolutely! The cost of a primate safari in Uganda is not just an expense—it’s an investment in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. By trekking to see these incredible primates, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of their survival and the efforts to protect their endangered species. Your safari fees contribute to the conservation of these primates and their habitats, helping preserve Uganda’s natural wonders for future generations.

Without primate tourism, much of Uganda’s forest ecosystems would be at risk of destruction. However, the revenue from tourism helps fund the protection of these forests, managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. In turn, this supports not only conservation but also the development of local communities through programs funded by tourism fees, such as school construction, healthcare and agriculture projects.

The Impact of Your Safari

The money spent on your primate safari also benefits the local communities living near Uganda’s primate habitats. Local communities receive 20% of the income generated from permits and park fees, directly improving their livelihoods. This incentivizes them to protect the primates and their natural surroundings, creating a sustainable cycle of conservation.

While trekking for hours through the forests and paying for expensive permits may seem daunting, the experience of seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild is priceless. Many travelers are so captivated by the experience that they book multiple treks, sometimes even for different species, to get as much as possible out of their safari.
