Tracking Black Rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Tracking Black Rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy: A Premier Wildlife Experience in Kenya

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of Kenya’s premier wildlife sanctuaries, famous for hosting the Big Five and its incredible conservation efforts. Located in the heart of Laikipia County, Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and is home to the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Additionally, it houses the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, making it a must-visit destination for animal lovers and conservation enthusiasts.

Wildlife Highlights at Ol Pejeta Conservancy

1. Black and Northern White Rhinos

Ol Pejeta protects over 110 critically endangered black rhinos and is home to the last two northern white rhinos in the world. The conservancy employs highly trained protection squads and collaborates with international experts to ensure the survival of these iconic species.

2. Meet Baraka the Black Rhino

Baraka, one of the first rhinos born in Ol Pejeta, is a living symbol of the conservancy’s success. Due to an injury that left him blind, Baraka now lives in a safe, 100-acre enclosure where visitors can meet and learn about his story up close—a perfect opportunity for photography and filming.

3. Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

This sanctuary provides a safe haven for 36 rescued and orphaned chimpanzees from Central and West Africa. Managed in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Jane Goodall Institute, the sanctuary offers visitors a chance to observe chimpanzees in their naturalized environment while supporting their care and rehabilitation.

4. Lion Tracking Experience

Experience a hands-on conservation activity by tracking lions in the wild. Join expert guides to monitor lion populations and learn about their behavior. Tracking sessions are offered daily between 6:30 AM – 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM, providing a rare opportunity for an up-close encounter.

Best Time to Visit Ol Pejeta Conservancy for Wildlife Viewing

Ol Pejeta offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is during Kenya’s dry seasons:

• December to March (hot dry season)
• July to October (cool dry season)

During these periods, animals are easier to spot near waterholes and the roads are more accessible. If you plan to visit during the rainy months (April, May or November), a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
