Trek Gorillas in Uganda

Trek Gorillas in Uganda: Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re planning to trek gorillas in Uganda, you’ll need to secure a gorilla trekking permit in advance. Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and having a permit is essential to participate in this unforgettable experience.

Where to Trek Gorillas in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two stunning national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the most popular destinations for gorilla trekking.

Uganda shares these majestic creatures with other countries like Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and DR Congo (Virunga National Park). Each of these parks requires a gorilla permit to access the gorillas.

If you’re planning to trek during the peak season (June to September), it’s essential to book at least 5 months in advance, as permits can sell out quickly during this time.

How to Book Your Gorilla Permit in Uganda

Booking your Uganda gorilla permit is easy once you know your travel dates. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you:

1. Contact Us: Once you’ve confirmed your travel dates, send us an email. We will check the availability of gorilla permits for your desired dates with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
2. Permit Reservation: Once we confirm availability, we’ll notify you and send an invoice for payment.
3. Secure Your Permit: After payment, we’ll purchase your permit and send you a scanned copy for your records.

It’s important to book your permit at least 2-3 months in advance, as permits are limited and sell out quickly. The earlier you book, the better your chances of securing your spot for the trek.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible throughout the year but the best time to go is during the drier months of January, February and June to September. During these months, the trails are easier to navigate due to reduced rainfall and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is an adventure like no other and being well-prepared is key to enjoying the experience. To ensure your trek is comfortable, here’s a list of essential items to pack for your gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda.

• Comfortable Hiking Boots: A sturdy, comfortable pair of boots or walking shoes is a must. The forest can be muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy season. Be sure to bring boots that offer good traction, as some sections may be steep and challenging.
• Insect Repellent: The forest can have biting insects, so be sure to pack a reliable insect repellent to protect yourself from bugs and other pests.
• Torch/Flashlight & Spare Batteries: While gorilla trekking generally happens during the day, having a flashlight on hand is a great backup, especially if your trek goes later into the day.
• Wet Wipes: For easy freshening up during the trek, carry some wet wipes in your pack. They’re great for cleaning your hands or face after touching plants or other surfaces.
• Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during the trek with a refillable water bottle. You’ll be walking through the forest for several hours, so it’s important to keep water on hand.
• Camera and Lenses: You won’t want to miss capturing the breathtaking moments with the gorillas. Make sure to pack your camera and any extra lenses you might need. A lightweight, zoom lens is ideal for capturing close-up shots from a distance.
• Gardening Gloves: While trekking, gardening gloves can come in handy to protect your hands from the undergrowth, stinging nettles and biting ants.
• Hat and Sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. Even though you’re trekking through a forest, the sun can still be strong at times.
• Rain Jacket: The weather in the rainforest is unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to pack a light, waterproof rain jacket.
• Sweater/Fleece: It can get cool in the forest, especially in the mornings and evenings, so bring a light sweater or fleece to stay comfortable.
• Sandals or Flip Flops: After the trek, you’ll appreciate a pair of sandals to change into and relax your feet.
• Binoculars: If you’re a fan of bird watching or wildlife spotting, don’t forget binoculars to enhance your experience in the forest.
• Swimwear: If your trip includes a visit to nearby lakes or lodges with swimming pools, pack your swimwear for a refreshing dip.

Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years. However, the trek’s difficulty is based on fitness levels. For older or less fit travelers, sedan chairs are available to transport individuals who may not be able to walk long distances. These chairs can be hired in advance or on the day of the trek, with prices ranging from USD 400-500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

Once a gorilla permit is booked, it is typically non-refundable. However, due to recent disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, both Uganda and Rwanda have relaxed their cancellation policies. If you can’t make it to your trekking date, you may be able to reschedule your trip for up to two times or receive a refund depending on the situation. Please contact us for specific details on cancellation policies and options.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Getting to Bwindi Forest National Park is relatively straightforward, with options for both road and air travel.

• By Road: If you’re traveling by road, the southern sector of Bwindi Forest National Park can be accessed via the main safari circuit from Entebbe or Kampala.
