Are you looking for an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda? Consider trekking Group 13, one of the most fascinating gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park. Despite its name, this group consists of over 26 individuals, including one dominant silverback, 11 adult females, four juveniles and two infants.
About Group 13 (Agashya Group): History and Significance
Contrary to its name, Group 13 was not named based on the number of gorillas but rather the order in which it was discovered, a system initiated by the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey.
Group 13 has a rich and complex history. In 1992, the group lost its leading silverback, Murith, which caused the adult females to migrate to other silverbacks. Some females formed the Sabyinyo group, leaving three young males—Munani, Nyakarima and Kwirinda—who stayed together until Munani matured into a silverback. Over time, he acquired females from other groups, expanding his family.
After Munani’s death in 2002, the group was temporarily led by a blackback and the oldest female, Safari, until a new silverback named Agashya took over. Agashya brought three additional members, growing the family to 10 and eventually to 21 under his strong leadership. His name, meaning “something special,” reflects his ability to lead such a large group.
The trek to meet Group 13 takes approximately 35–45 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park entrance, making it one of the more accessible gorilla groups for visitors.

Discover Volcanoes National Park: Home to Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas
Volcanoes National Park or Parc National des Volcans, is located in Musanze, Rwanda. As one of Africa’s oldest national parks, it is home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and a variety of bird species, primates and unique vegetation. The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, encompassing five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
Gorilla tourism is vital for Rwanda’s economy, attracting thousands of visitors annually. Trekking these incredible primates supports conservation and local communities while offering an awe-inspiring experience.
Rwanda Gorilla Permit Availability: What You Need to Know
Volcanoes National Park hosts 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, with a maximum of 8 visitors per group per day. This means only 80 permits are available daily, ensuring an intimate, low-impact gorilla trekking experience.
Visitors have a 99% chance of seeing the gorillas, guided by expert trackers, rangers and guides. Treks begin daily at 7:00 AM from the Kinigi Visitor Center, where you receive a briefing on trekking guidelines.
Although gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals, so it is essential to respect their space and follow park rules.
