Trekking Chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park

Trekking Chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and pristine national parks, offering an incredible opportunity for chimpanzee trekking. Nestled along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, near the Congo border, Mahale is home to around 1,000 chimpanzees. The park is renowned for its Mimikire clan, a group of around 56 chimps that have been habituated by researchers since 1965. With its large chimpanzee population and stunning natural surroundings, Mahale is considered one of the best places in East Africa to observe chimpanzees in the wild.

Why Go Chimpanzee Trekking in Mahale?

Trekking chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park provides you with an extraordinary chance to witness large populations of chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Compared to other parks like Gombe National Park, Mahale offers more frequent and extended sightings of chimpanzees. The park boasts a variety of habitats, from miombo forests and lowland forests to montane rainforests, creating a diverse ecosystem rich in flora and fauna. This makes it an ideal location for chimpanzee filming and photography.

Beyond chimpanzees, Mahale is also home to a variety of other East African primates, including red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys, among others. These animals are best spotted during the wet and fruiting seasons, which makes trekking them easier.

Community Interaction and Cultural Experience

In addition to wildlife, Mahale offers a unique opportunity to engage with the local communities that live in harmony with the chimpanzee populations. Surrounding the park are several communities who share the land with the chimpanzees. During your trek, you’ll have the chance to interact with these communities, learn how they coexist with the wildlife and understand their way of life in such close proximity to the chimpanzees.

Best Time to Trek Chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park

The best time for trekking chimpanzees in Mahale is during the rainy season (November to mid-May). The lush green vegetation during this time creates a breathtaking scenic backdrop and it’s easier to spot chimpanzees as they move through the forest in search of food. Alternatively, the dry season (May to October) offers the perfect conditions for photography and longer hikes, as the fruiting season provides abundant food for the chimpanzees, making tracking easier.

While the best seasons for trekking are the wet and dry periods, chimpanzees can be observed year-round in Mahale, offering an unforgettable experience no matter when you visit.
