While it requires time, planning and physical effort, trekking to see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an unparalleled wildlife experience. The trek takes you through dense forests, challenging terrain and sometimes swampy areas, so it’s important to be physically fit.

How to Secure Your Gorilla Permit for Trekking in Uganda

Before you can go gorilla trekking, you must secure a gorilla permit. These permits allow access to the gorilla parks and due to high demand, they can sell out quickly—especially during the peak seasons of June to September. To ensure you get a permit for your chosen dates, we recommend booking at least 5 months in advance.

• Uganda Gorilla Permits:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
  • Residents: $700 per person
  • East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan): $80 per person

A Gorilla Habituation Permit in Bwindi costs $1500, giving you the chance to spend four hours with the gorillas, as opposed to the usual one-hour trek.

Age Limit and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years and there is no official maximum age limit, though physical fitness is a consideration. Elderly trekkers can benefit from sedan chair carriers, which are available for those who might struggle with the physical demands of the trek. These chairs can be hired in advance or on the day of the trek, at a cost of $400-$500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy and Penalties in Uganda

A gorilla permit is required for all gorilla trekking trips in Uganda. It’s important to note that once you book a gorilla permit, it is expected that you will use it on the scheduled date. If you cancel your gorilla permit within 0 to 8 days before the trek, there will be no refund provided. This policy is consistent across Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible throughout the year but the best time to visit is during the drier months, which typically fall between January, February and June to early September. During these months, the conditions are easier for trekking as the weather is drier and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.
