Uganda Gorilla Trekking from Kigali: Your Ultimate Guide

Are you planning to kick off your Uganda Gorilla Trekking adventure from Kigali, Rwanda? Whether you’re based in Rwanda or simply want to explore both Rwanda and Uganda, Trek Africa Gorillas is here to help you organize the perfect gorilla trek from Kigali.

Rwanda, a landlocked gem known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Africa. It’s not only a country of natural beauty but also one of the cleanest and most organized nations on the continent. The scenic views along its northern, western and eastern borders make it the perfect starting point for a memorable gorilla trekking experience.

Experience the Thrill of Gorilla Trekking from Kigali

Gorilla trekking is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most iconic and rewarding wildlife experiences. The excitement of trekking through dense forests to find the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is unparalleled. While it can be physically challenging—requiring some fitness due to the rough terrain, thick vegetation and sometimes wet conditions—the rewards of encountering these incredible animals are more than worth the effort.

If you prefer to spend more time with these magnificent creatures, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda, which gives you a unique opportunity to stay with the gorillas for up to 4 hours.

Where to Trek Gorillas in Africa: Uganda, Rwanda & Congo

The great news is that you can begin your gorilla trek in Rwanda, even though the gorillas call Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) home. The four national parks hosting these endangered species are:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda)
• Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
• Virunga National Park (Congo)

In Congo, you also have the chance to see lowland gorillas at Kahuzi-Biega National Park. To trek at any of these parks, a gorilla permit is essential, so it’s advisable to secure your permit well in advance.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs and How to Book

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
• Residents: $700 per person
• East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan): $80 per person

A gorilla permit gives you one hour of close interaction with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families (16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga), with 136 permits available daily. For those looking for an even deeper experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi allows for 4 hours of intimate interaction with semi-habituated gorillas, priced at $1,500 per person.

Permits can be booked directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or via a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Age Limits and Special Assistance for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years and the maximum age is typically 85 years, depending on fitness levels. To accommodate elderly travelers, Bwindi Forest offers sedan chair carriers to assist those who may struggle with the hike. These chairs can be rented in advance or on the day of your trek, with costs ranging from $400 to $500.

Important Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies

Gorilla trekking permits are non-refundable once purchased and cancellation policies apply strictly, especially within 8 days of the trek. However, due to the pandemic, policies have become more flexible, with some operators allowing two date changes.
