Whether you’re an experienced safari traveler or a first-time explorer, Uganda’s gorilla trekking offers an unforgettable experience. Let’s guide you on how to make the most of your trip.

Why Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Is a Must-Do Wildlife Experience

Gorilla trekking is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. This thrilling activity allows you to hike through dense forests, navigating tricky terrain in search of one of the world’s most majestic creatures – the mountain gorilla. Despite the physical challenge of trekking through thick vegetation, crossing rivers and climbing rugged paths, the reward is unmatched: spending an hour with these fascinating primates in their natural habitat.

In Uganda, gorilla trekking is done in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both located near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These lush forests are home to the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. For a truly immersive experience, consider Uganda’s Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, which offers up to 4 hours of interaction with semi-habituated gorillas under the guidance of researchers and trackers.

How to Travel from Tanzania to Uganda for Gorilla Trekking

If you’re starting your journey from Tanzania, you have two convenient options for traveling to Uganda for gorilla trekking: by air or by road.

• By Air: There are direct flights from Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro to Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport. Once in Uganda, Trek Africa Gorillas will assist with transfers to your gorilla trekking destination.
• By Road: If you prefer a more adventurous option, you can travel by road. The drive from Tanzania to Uganda can be an exciting journey, allowing you to witness the beautiful landscapes along the way.

Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa: Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

Gorilla trekking is available in three African countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The four national parks that are home to these endangered primates are:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi Beiga National Park (for lowland gorillas)

While Rwanda and Congo also offer incredible gorilla trekking experiences, Uganda remains one of the most popular destinations due to its diverse trekking routes and the chance to explore the stunning landscapes of Bwindi and Mgahinga.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permits: Prices and Booking Tips

In Uganda, securing a gorilla trekking permit is a crucial part of your planning. Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

• Foreign non-residents: $800 per person per trek
• Foreign residents: $700 per person
• East African citizens (including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan): $80 per person

Each permit gives you the chance to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas. Uganda is home to 20 habituated gorilla families, with 136 permits available each day across Bwindi and Mgahinga. The demand for permits is high, especially during the peak season (June to September), so it’s advisable to book at least 5 months in advance.

If you want more time with the gorillas, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi. This exclusive experience allows you to spend 4 hours with the gorillas and costs $1,500 per person.

How to Secure Your Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda

You can easily obtain your gorilla trekking permit through Uganda’s Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or by booking with a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas. We’ll help you secure permits and customize your trip to ensure a smooth and memorable experience.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Rwanda

If you’re considering a trek in Rwanda, here are the permit details:

• Foreign non-residents: $1,500 per person
• Foreign residents: $500 per person

Gorilla Trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo

For those interested in visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo, gorilla trekking is done in Virunga National Park for mountain gorillas and Kahuzi Beiga National Park for lowland gorillas. Permits for Congo’s Virunga National Park range from $200 to $400 depending on the season. The Congo offers a unique experience for those looking to explore less-visited areas and observe both mountain and lowland gorillas.

Important Considerations About Gorilla Permits

When booking your gorilla permit, please note that the cost only covers the permit and doesn’t include accommodation, meals, air tickets or ground transport. Be sure to ask your tour operator for a full breakdown of your package, including all associated costs.

Age Requirements and Special Assistance for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an exciting adventure but there are certain age requirements to consider. The minimum age for participating in a gorilla trek is 15 years, while the maximum age is 85 years. However, the ability to trek is also dependent on your fitness level.

For elders or those who may find the trek physically demanding, Uganda offers a special service. In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, sedan chairs are available to assist those who have difficulty walking through the forest. These chairs are carried by porters and are available for hire either in advance or on the day of your trek. The cost for hiring a sedan chair typically ranges from $400 to $500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy in Uganda

If you’re planning to go gorilla trekking, you’ll need a gorilla permit. These permits are non-refundable if you cancel within 8 days before your trek. Unfortunately, if you miss your scheduled trek, there’s no refund for the permit.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda for Ideal Conditions

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the drier months, making it easier to navigate the forest and get clear views of the gorillas. The ideal months for trekking are:

• January and February
• June to early September

During these months, the trails are less muddy and the dense vegetation in the forest is easier to manage. While gorilla trekking is possible year-round, these months provide the best conditions for an unforgettable experience.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding and the forest terrain is often muddy, so it’s important to pack the right gear. Here’s a list of recommended items to bring:
